High winds pose a significant risk to electric gates, particularly solid, boarded designs that act as sails, causing strain on motors, hinges, and pillars. To prevent damage, secure gates in either the fully open or closed position during high winds, ensuring they cannot swing freely.
Operational Advice: In extreme winds, it is safer to keep gates open. If you have drop bolts or locks fitted make sure the are engaged. If the gates must be used, do not force them if they stop or reverse due to wind pressure, as this can damage the motor.
Risk Factors: Strong gusts can cause misalignment, force gate leaves to bend, or cause damage to motor mountings. Solid (close-boarded) gates are most vulnerable, while open-pattern (iron) designs allow wind to pass through.
Post-Storm Inspection: After high winds, If you haven’t already had an annual maintenance undertaken this year or your due one in the next few months, we would highly recommend booking an annual service as soon as possible. By having a frequent gate service any issues can be caught early and dealt with prior to a major malfunction happening
