Another day, another OPTIME condition monitoring install underway by Sutton.

Adding sensors to an existing asset structure is seamless, and spinning up a brand new asset takes less than 30 seconds. Fast, simple, no fuss.

How much sawdust should you store inside a servo motor?

Ideally, none.

This Yaskawa servo motor recently came into our workshop in need of some attention, with a significant build-up of sawdust contamination inside the motor. The contamination had entered through a broken power connector, allowing dust and debris to find their way into areas where they definitely shouldn't be.

Contamination is one of the most common causes of servo motor issues. Over time, dust and debris can affect bearings, cooling, feedback systems, and overall reliability, increasing the risk of unexpected failures and costly downtime.

Following a thorough inspection, cleaning, testing, and restoration, the motor was returned to a much healthier condition and ready to go back into service.

The project was also supported by our Octava diagnostic technology, helping alexander accurately assess the motor's condition and validate performance throughout the repair process.

When it comes to fan balancing, getting the vibration level down is only part of the job.

Recently, our Senior Reliability Engineer, Sutton, was carrying out fan balancing as part of a commissioning programme. But rather than simply checking the 1x vibration level and moving on, Tom took a much deeper approach.

Bearing temperatures were monitored throughout the process, full spectrum vibration readings were collected and verified against online monitoring systems and DCS data, and the fan was gradually ramped up to identify any resonance zones where operation should be avoided.

This level of attention to detail helps ensure equipment is not only balanced correctly, but is operating safely, reliably, and efficiently before being handed back to the customer.

It's this thorough approach that helps reduce risk, improve reliability, and build long-term trust with our customers, often leading to repeat work and ongoing partnerships.
