🌟 Supporting Our Community Through the SWAGGA Neighbourhood Health Hub 🌟

We were delighted to visit the newly opened SWAGGA Neighbourhood Health Hub in Garston treatment rooms.

The hub offers a welcoming and inclusive space where people can access support, meet others and take positive steps towards improving their health and wellbeing.

The team are currently looking for donations of tea, coffee and biscuits to help create a warm and friendly environment for visitors. If you are a local business, organisation or resident who would like to contribute, any donation would be greatly appreciated. Please drop off at the hub located next to the pharmacy.

People often ask what being a local councillor actually involves.

The truth is that for most councillors, it’s not a full-time job. We receive a basic allowance, but the role is fundamentally one of public service. We both have full-time jobs alongside being councillors, and much of the work happens in the evenings, at weekends, and in between everything else life throws at us.

A typical week can involve helping residents with housing issues, planning applications, anti-social behaviour, highways concerns, community events, meetings with organisations, reading reports, attending council meetings, and campaigning on local issues. Sometimes it’s dealing with a major issue affecting hundreds of people, and sometimes it’s helping one resident who doesn’t know where else to turn.

One thing that perhaps makes us a little different is that we’ve chosen to be highly accessible. We publish our contact details, are active on social media, respond directly to messages, attend community events, we try to be available when people need us. That does sometimes mean phone calls early in the morning, messages late at night, and requests that can’t always be solved. Sadly that leaves us open to receiving unwanted abuse online and over the phone. But we’d rather people felt able to contact us than not know where to turn.

It can be demanding, frustrating and time-consuming, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. You get the opportunity to stand up for your community, challenge decisions, and make a genuine difference to people’s lives.

One thing local government needs is more people from ordinary working backgrounds to get involved. You don’t need to be a career politician. You don’t need special qualifications. You just need to care about your area and be willing to put the work in.

If you’ve ever thought, “Someone should do something about that,” maybe it’s worth considering whether that someone could be you.
