I have decided with the music box restoration of my own to go a different way, as the box is realey beat up, stain and shellac are not going to give me the look i want.
So my thoughts are as its in affect a musical instrument i thought a nice piano black, but then i thought there is a bump on the box lid and a gloss black will highlight any imperfection so lets go with a nice high build matt black, then ill finish it of with a very very light wax not enough of a shine to highlight imperfection and i can control the shine much better with a wax, this will go very well with the movement with its chrome fittings, and some nice simple brass inlay nothing fancy, the box has now had 3 coats of primer and will be flattened of then 4 coats of black flattened of 3 times the last with a very fine wet and dry then a canuba wax, this is a generated image, its missing a key plate i will make out of a piece of brass stock, this will be a truly one off, i would have liked to go with a beautiful dark mahogany with several coats of shellac but the old box would let the whole thing down.

I have made a start on the Antique 10 Aires musical box, this box is pretty much a basket case and looks to have had a hard life, I have no idea of it’s maker at the moment but maybe this will become more obvious when I start the work on the movement.
Because the movement looks like it’s not in its original box and the box is not the usual high quality box im not going to worry about preservation of its originality and a sympathetic restoration won’t improve the musical box in any way so complete restoration is the only way to go and as the box is one of my own I can pretty much do what works.

Another musical box purchased for my own collection, this box has seen better days and I’m thinking it’s a real Frankenstein but I’m sure with a bit of hard work and attention to detail I can breath new life into this old musical box.

These are the pictures of the cleaned movement parts, the comb has a lot of pitting and the pin barrel was completely covered in oil, so unfortunately it has left some marks, the cast iron frame also has suffered so this will be cleaned properly and given a coat of paint ,trying to clean it will not do anything for it, the case will be given a sympathetic clean and polish.
The glass door at the top is completely missing so I will use some hardwood I have I will cut it down into the correct size pieces make a new door and get a sheet of glass thin maybe 2 to 3 mm the glaze it after giving it a black colour to match little piece of leather to lift open the door and then identify the maker and put together a tune sheet and I think that just about covers this job, the number on the music box is 86547.

I have cleaned all parts on the larger music box , I assumed it was a PVF but after getting in touch with the Musical Box Society of Great Britain , they think not, so some further research needed to locate a tune sheet,but for now the service and a bush is going to be made and replaced in the mainspring mount far to much play in it, what I did not do is mark the pin barrel for location when I reassemble but there are already what looks like timing marks at either end one is a single scratch the other end is 2 scratches they run in line with the dots in line that run completely along the barrel, im assuming they run along the centre as there are no marked on anything else to correspond, in future use my own timing marks just like I do when working on a chiming clock.

My journey into the world of music boxes has started, i have booked 2 music boxes in for restoration so i will enjoy taking some pictures and videos, both are from the 19th century the 1st one is a parlour type made by Nicole Freres and retailed in wales, so it should be something to behold, the next one looks to be in nice condition but the customer is informing me of some odd never heard before noises so some investigation and i will as always fully service the movement.
As soon as i have them i will take some pictures.

Well i have finally bit the bullet, after years, people asking me to restore Antique music boxes i have decided to add it to my successful Antique clock restoration business after all i am skilled enough and have small but very well equipped workshops to make the many parts you simply cant get, like most of the clocks i restore.
So im looking forward to sharing some of my music box restoration adventures with you., im sure there will be a few interesting tales, a few family stories and some beautiful Music boxes
