🚪🔥 Fire Door Operator Installation – Nursing Home

We’ve installed a Briton 996 fire door operator on the kitchen door in one of the nursing homes we maintain.

This allows the door to be held open during normal operation, improving accessibility and day-to-day movement, while still maintaining fire safety.

🚨 When the fire alarm is activated, the operator automatically releases, allowing the door to close and helping to reduce the spread of fire.

This home chose a fire door operator rather than a magnetic hold-open system — both are compliant options, but this solution best suited their layout and usage.

A simple upgrade that improves usability without compromising safety.

⚡ EICR Remedial Works Completed

Following an EICR, a number of remedial items were identified and rectified to bring the installation back up to standard:

🧯 Distribution board upgraded to a non-combustible, fire-rated unit
🔌 Individual RCBO protection installed for improved safety and fault isolation
💡 Bathroom light upgraded to an IP-rated fitting
🚨 Damaged smoke detector replaced
🔧 Damaged double socket replaced
⚡ 10mm main earth bonding installed to the gas meter

All works completed, tested, and left compliant.

This is the kind of follow-up work we carry out daily after EICRs — practical improvements that directly increase safety and reliability.

❄️ 20A Supply for AC Unit – Nursing Home Meds Room

Another coordination job completed in one of the nursing homes we look after.

The AC engineers installed the unit, and our role was to provide a dedicated 20A electrical supply. The work included:

🔌 Supply installed in surface-mounted conduit internally
🧱 Core drilled through the external wall
🔧 External run completed in flexible conduit
🔄 Terminated into a 20A rotary isolator
✅ Connected, tested, and left fully operational

These types of jobs rely on clear coordination between trades and careful working in sensitive environments — especially in medication rooms where accuracy and cleanliness matter.

Good work from Kieran and Jack 👏

🔌 Simple Socket Installation – Nursing Home Maintenance

A small but important job carried out in one of the nursing homes we maintain.

The comms engineers required a double socket installed above the door for new data cabling. As requested:

📏 Cables were run in surface-mounted trunking to prevent any damage to walls
🚪 Socket positioned high level, clear of residents and day-to-day activity

Jobs like this are part of our daily maintenance work across nursing homes — simple tasks done properly, with the environment always in mind.

Working in care settings means being conscious of:

🧠 Vulnerable residents
🤫 Noise and disruption
🧹 Clean, tidy workmanship
⏱️ Efficient working to minimise impact

Not every job is complex, but every job still matters.

⚡ Distribution Board Upgrade – RCBO Protected

Nice bit of work from Matty on this one 👏

The existing board wasn’t terrible — it already had dual RCD protection — but:

🔥 It was a plastic board, which doesn’t meet current fire safety standards
⚠️ Dual RCDs mean if one circuit trips, multiple circuits are affected

The client wanted an upgrade that improved both safety and fault isolation, so we installed:

🧯 A fire-rated metal distribution board
🔌 Individual RCBO protection on each circuit
✅ Improved fire compliance
✅ Easier fault finding
✅ No unnecessary loss of power if a single circuit develops a fault

A solid, sensible upgrade that makes a real difference day to day.

🚿 Bathroom DMEV Fan Installation – ECO4

Not every job is about perfect walls and hidden cables — and that’s okay 👍

This ECO4 install was completed fully to funder specification and client request:

🔌 Supply taken from the existing bathroom light
📏 All cabling run in surface-mounted trunking to avoid disturbing walls and ceilings
🚪 Fan isolator installed outside the bathroom
🧱 4” core drilled through the external wall
🌬️ Greenwood DMEV fan installed
🛡️ Gravity external grille fitted as specified

The property itself isn’t pristine, but the installation is compliant, tested, and fit for purpose — which is exactly what matters on this type of work ✔️

We carry out everything from high-end commercial installs to day-to-day ECO and maintenance work like this. Showing only “perfect” jobs doesn’t reflect the reality of the work we do.

This is real work, in real homes, for real clients.

🚨 What we found during a routine EICR… 🚨

While carrying out an Electrical Condition Report, we came across a bathroom light that had been chain-drilled out so it could be forced over an old pendant base.

What was wrong 👇

❌ The cables inside the pendant base were damaged and causing nuisance tripping
❌ The back of the fitting had been destroyed, meaning the IP rating was completely compromised
❌ Moisture was able to enter the fitting – in a bathroom, that’s a serious risk
❌ This setup could have led to electric shock or fire

This is exactly why EICRs matter.

Issues like this are often hidden until the fitting is removed – and they’re far more common than people think.
If you’re a landlord, homeowner, or managing properties and haven’t had your electrics checked recently, don’t assume everything is safe just because “it’s been working”.

🔵 Safe, robust power for commercial kitchen equipment 🔵

We were recently asked to install a dedicated supply for two commercial fryers at another one of the nursing homes we regularly support with ongoing electrical works.

🔧 Scope of works:

✔️ New supply taken directly from the distribution board
✔️ Cables run in surface-mounted trunking for protection and accessibility
✔️ Installation of a metal-clad isolator and 2 × metal-clad single sockets — built to handle demanding commercial environments
✔️ Full testing completed to confirm the circuit is operating safely and correctly

Metal-clad accessories are the right choice in commercial kitchens — tough, reliable, and designed to withstand heat, impact, and daily use. More importantly, proper isolation means staff can safely control equipment when required.

Another job delivered with safety, durability, and compliance front and centre.

🔵 Electrical safety first — EICR findings explained 🔵

We’ve recently completed an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) for a landlord and identified a couple of important safety issues that now need addressing.

⚠️ Key observations:

🔹 C2 – Circuits supplying heaters were found without RCD protection. This presents a potential danger and requires remedial action.
🔹 C3 – The existing distribution board is made from a combustible material and does not meet current fire safety standards. While not immediately dangerous, it falls short of best practice.

🔧 Our recommendation:

We’ve advised that the most effective and future-proof solution is to upgrade the distribution board to a metal, 18th Edition RCBO consumer unit. This will:

✔️ Ensure all circuits are RCD protected
✔️ Bring the installation in line with current fire regulations
✔️ Improve overall safety, compliance, and reliability

The EICR report and quotation have been issued, and we’re now awaiting the landlord’s decision on how they’d like to proceed.

Clear reporting, straight advice, and practical solutions — exactly how electrical safety should be handled. ⚡

🔵 Lighting that works when safety matters most 🔵

We’ve just completed a new perimeter flood lighting installation for one of our long-standing nursing home clients, where we handle a wide range of ongoing electrical works across the site.

💡 What we delivered:
✔️ 30W LED floodlights for consistent, wide coverage
✔️ Photocell control — automatically on at dusk, off at dawn
✔️ No switches, no human error, no daily checks required

Most importantly, this upgrade significantly reduces the risk of trips and falls by ensuring walkways, entrances, and perimeter areas are properly lit throughout the night — improving safety for residents, staff, and visitors alike.

This kind of solution is about more than lighting. It’s about risk reduction, reliability, and peace of mind in environments where safety is non-negotiable.

We value long-term relationships and take pride in supporting our clients with practical, well-thought-out electrical solutions that just work.

🔧⚡ Reliable systems. Safer spaces. Done properly.

🚨 EICR Reality Check 🚨

This is exactly why Electrical Installation Condition Reports matter.

📸 Photo 1:
Bathroom downlight that’s not IP-rated and not fire-rated ❌
Wrong fitting. Wrong location. Serious safety issue.

📸 Photos 2–4:
Sockets with missing switch rockers – exposed internals, increased risk of electric shock, and an instant fail on an EICR.

⚡ These are the kind of faults we regularly pick up during EICRs – especially in rental and older properties.
⚡ Most landlords don’t know these issues exist until they’re flagged.
⚡ Left unchecked, they put tenants at risk and landlords on the hook.

✅ Inspection
✅ Clear reports
✅ Remedials carried out quickly

If you’re a landlord, agent, or homeowner and you’re unsure whether your electrics are compliant — it’s time to check.
