This 1797 British painting from shows two lime kilns near Cardigan, Wales.

Lime kilns were constructed to burn limestone, a common carbonate sedimentary rock primarily composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), with coal or other fuels to make quicklime.

For the core of the limestone to reach the required temperatures in a reasonable time, the temperature in the kiln had to reach 950°C. In early kilns, the temperature varied throughout, leaving lumps of lime unconverted and some sections over-burned.

Quicklime is still a popular traditional material today and can be found in hot-mixed mortars, including our own CLH28.
