Really sad to hear that Nigel Dunnett has died.
I was lucky enough to learn from him on the naturalistic planting design course with . Even though it was only a short course, it’s had a big impact on how I approach planting.
He was a really generous teacher: open, thoughtful, and clearly passionate about sharing what he knew. I genuinely loved his sessions.
His approach to planting continues to ripple out through so many gardens, including my own work. 🌿
He will be sadly missed 💚

Planting time!
Before anything goes into the ground, everything is sorted and grouped, then set out and adjusted on site.
Spacing, balance, sight lines and relationships between plants... this is where the design moves from paper to reality.
Good planting isn’t random. It’s considered, measured and designed to evolve. 🌿

Plant delivery day!! 🌿
Weeks of planning distilled into groups and rows of carefully labelled pots of plants.
This scheme has been designed to mature in layers - structure first, then seasonal rhythm and long-term resilience.
The transformation begins now. 🌸🌿

A well-designed garden doesn’t begin with paving or planting.
It begins with listening 🌿 understanding how a space needs to be used, assessing what already exists, identifying what should be retained, refined or reimagined, and then translating that into a clear, workable plan.
Not every project requires starting from scratch. Often the strongest gardens are created by working thoughtfully with established trees, planting and structure.
Clarity at this stage saves time, cost and unnecessary removal later. ✏️

Spring starts with snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils - but it’s the primroses that quietly take over next.
These understated flowers bridge the early bulbs and the taller, showier perennials, creating texture, colour, and a soft foundation for what’s to come.
Ground cover plants that protect the soil, provide early nectar for emerging insects and in my garden come in a range of colours from almost white to the darkest cerise.
Never underestimate the impact of these small but important early-season gems. 🌿

Planting for spring in the village community garden; daffodils, fresh growth and a little preparation ahead of last Sunday's Saint David's Day celebrations.
Good planting isn’t about instant impact, it’s about rhythm and return. 🌿

From open lawn to defined structure.
This private client garden is now built and ready for its final layer of planting.
The design focused on creating clearer structure and usable areas, while maintaining a sense of openness and flow.
The hard landscaping establishes the framework: levels, movement, proportion and material relationships.
Planting will follow, softening the edges and introducing depth, seasonal change and habitat.
Good gardens are built in layers. This is the structural one.

I’ve spent the last couple of days sorting through and archiving old designs, making space for what’s next.
This one is from a few years ago, and the drawings though printed for the client were never scanned, so these original drawings on tracing paper are the only record I have.
It’s been really nice to slow down and look back at past work, noticing how much my style has stayed true, while also seeing how it’s evolved over time. ✏️💚
