We recently completed specialist lime repointing works to the upper façade of this beautiful period property in South London.
The project focused on the decorative top section of the building, where the original mortar joints had deteriorated over time. Our team carefully raked out the existing pointing by hand to preserve the character of the brickwork before repointing the entire upper elevation using traditional NHL lime mortar.
The contrast between the completed upper section and the untouched lower elevation highlights the impact that sympathetic restoration can have on period properties. The upper brickwork now appears cleaner, sharper and far more defined, with the natural colour of the brickwork enhanced by the breathable lime finish.
Unlike modern cement mortars, NHL lime allows the building to breathe and move naturally, making it particularly suitable for historic and Victorian properties such as this one. The restored upper section retains the property's original character while providing long-term protection against weathering and moisture retention.
By comparison, the lower section still displays the darker, more weathered appearance associated with ageing mortar and years of environmental exposure, demonstrating the significant visual improvement achieved through traditional lime repointing techniques.
