The past few weeks have meant a fair bit of travelling between different job sites, so I’m really grateful to be working closer to home again this coming week.

This project is one I originally started last year. Since then, the kitchen, doors, and windows have all been installed, which left a few areas needing some repair. While it’s never ideal returning to fix parts of a previous job, it’s always a pleasure to see a space so close to completion, especially with all the fixtures and fittings now in place.

During this visit, I also completed another phase of work on the external front door threshold. The polished concrete had definitely seen better days, but it’s now been fully restored—looking better than new, with my signature natural look, mineral-based finish.

The colour used throughout is Platine, and as always, the microcement is the mineral-based, non-yellowing Ad Lucem product.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work in so many beautiful new shower and bathroom spaces — this is another one recently completed.

What sets this project apart from many of the others I’ve worked on is the feature wall. Here, tiles take centre stage within what is otherwise a fully microcemented room, creating a subtle but striking contrast.

Microcement application is a truly artisan process. Every brand and every applicator produces a completely different finish. My focus is always on achieving a natural, stone-like aesthetic rather than the standard polished plaster look, which often shows the sweep of the trowel and visible application lines.

While the finish is smooth to the touch and appears refined in normal lighting, glancing light reveals the mineral content within the microcement — enhancing its depth and that organic, stone-inspired character.

The colour used here is Opale, and as always, the microcement is Ad Lucem — an epoxy-free, mineral-based system. .matieres

I’ll be working in an area with no signal for the next week or so — a blessing and a curse! If you’re trying to get hold of me during work hours, please send a message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

I’m lucky enough to take on both large- and small-scale microcement projects, and each has its own benefits. This kitchen floor was a smaller project, which gave me the time to really focus on creating the movement and pattern you can see — making it a true one-off. It was a brave colour choice, but one I think has absolutely paid off.

The colour here is Truffe by Ad Lucem - as a result of it being an epoxy free, mineral based microcement, the colour will truly last! .matieres

This latest project, though small, highlights the effectiveness of microcement as a practical and durable solution.

Since the property was built, the client had ongoing issues with cracked grout and water ingress. After investigation, it became clear that the tiles had been dab-fixed. This method leaves voids beneath the tiles which, over time, often leads to movement, loose tiles, and inevitably water finding its way through — exactly what had happened here.

Rather than removing the tiles and risking further damage, the solution was to drill access holes and inject resin into the voids and cavities. This stabilised and secured the existing tiles, creating a solid base.

This is where microcement came into its own. A thin microcement overlay was applied over the now-secure tiles, creating a seamless polished concrete finish while adding only a 3mm layer on top of the damaged surface. As an added benefit, the finish around the waste was significantly improved, correcting issues that existed previously.

The colour chosen for this project was the ever-popular Zinc, delivering a clean, modern finish with both style and performance. Swipe to see a few before pictures of these two (very similar looking) en-suite showers.

I’ve also included a photo of work I did in this property while under construction a few years ago - I’m proud to say it was a talking point on the show ‘Wales’ house of the year’ ! .matieres

Before the Christmas break, I completed this compact en-suite shower room, and it’s great to finally see the space finished with all the fixtures in place.

Microcement proved to be the ideal solution for such a small room. The seamless coating has been applied across the walls and ceiling, creating a clean, modern finish. Although the ceiling height is relatively low, there are no concerns about moisture — the entire space is now fully watertight, even when water gets everywhere.

Applying microcement to the ceiling is a real game-changer in bathrooms, as it eliminates issues like mould and peeling paint, which are all too common in UK homes.

The colour used here is Ombré, an earthy shade that has become increasingly popular and works beautifully in compact spaces. .matieres

I’ve been fortunate to work on a number of interesting projects over the past year, and this was a particularly rewarding build to be involved with.

This commercial project is a new poke bowl restaurant in Cardiff. The existing floor presented several challenges: a mix of timber and damaged concrete, a manhole cover, and a uniquely shaped built-in bench. Together, these elements made it one of the more technically demanding microcement installations I’ve completed.

In this case, microcement proved to be the ideal solution where other flooring systems would have struggled. The finished result delivers a seamless, concrete-like surface with no visible joins (apart from the manhole)—even where the bench appears to rise organically out of the floor.

The colour used is Galet, and the microcement system is by Ad Lucem: a breathable, mineral-based microcement with no epoxy content. .matieres

It’s that time of year again — deadlines are stacking up! If you’re trying to get hold of me about your next project, thank you for your patience. I may be a little slower to reply, but I’ll be in touch as soon as I can.

This recently completed bathroom combines tile and microcement beautifully, creating a clean, seamless finish. The backlit niche adds a real design feature within the shower, bringing both warmth and depth to the space.

Finished in Soie — a soft, neutral, earthy tone that works effortlessly in any setting 🤍

I’d like to present to you this most recently completed master shower room!

It’s a compact space but the use of a warm tone and coloured microcement, coupled with the more subtle movement (pattern) really lends itself to such a tranquil space.

The microcement is a full wrap. It covers all walls, floor and ceiling - so no more peeling paint!

The colour used here is Ombré, a fairly neutral and earthy colour. This coupled with the fixtures and fittings really does make the room spa like in appearance.

Thanks to NT Carpentry for the excellent work!

I just wrapped up this beautiful master shower room renovation!

It’s a compact space, but the warm-toned, coloured microcement and subtle movement in the finish create such a calm, tranquil feel.

The clients went for a full microcement wrap — walls, floor, and even the ceiling — meaning no more peeling paint and a seamless, spa-like look throughout.

The colour, Ombré, is a neutral earthy tone that pairs perfectly with the fixtures and fittings.

Huge thanks to NT Carpentry for their excellent work as always! .t_carpentry_ltd .matieres

Microcement Shower Floors – Why the Right Tray Matters 🛁✨

I was recently asked to take a look at a microcement shower that unfortunately hadn’t held up. The workmanship itself wasn’t bad, but the installer had used a foam shower tray former — and that’s where the trouble began.

Microcement is an amazing material, but it’s only as strong as the surface it’s applied to. Foam trays simply don’t offer the compaction strength needed. As soon as the shower was used, the tray flexed underfoot, the microcement cracked, and the whole area quickly became damaged.

In this case, the only solution was to remove the tray and rebuild the floor from scratch.

This is exactly why I only recommend Resin Rock shower trays. They’re specifically engineered for microcement:
• No multiple connections around the drain
• Solid, rigid construction
• Designed for long-term durability

Swipe through 👉
• Last photo: the damage caused by the foam tray
• Second to last: the Resin Rock tray installed and ready for microcement

Choosing the right foundation (and microcement brand!) makes all the difference — and it ensures your microcement bathroom stays beautiful for years to come. ✨. Colour - Lin .matieres

The culmination of 6 days’ work (not including planning!) over the past two weeks — nearly 140 square metres of flooring completed!

These 6 days included some very long hours, and probably far too much coffee and junk food… but I couldn’t be prouder of the result.

The finished floor has a subtle, mineral character — from the edges it appears cloudy and smooth, but when viewed straight on you can see the movement: what looks like texture yet feels completely smooth. Every floor I create is unique in its colour and finish, and this one is no exception. The only thing not unique is seamless quality of each surface - no lines to break up the flow!

As always, I used Ad Lucem Microcement — a cement-based, non-yellowing, breathable mineral microcement. As always I couldn’t have done it without the excellent
