Planning approval has been granted for the extension and redevelopment of the Hebrides People Centre in Northton on the Isle of Harris. The scheme includes new exhibition space focusing on the heritage of Harris and St Kilda. Additional research space with associated on site accommodation is also included in the scheme. The design features locally sourced natural stone cladding, renewable energy and bright, light filled gallery space. A new, fully accessible pedestrian bridge will provide the gateway to the building. We're looking forward to taking the project forward to the next stage with the appointed design team.

We are really delighted to have received a commendation award in the 'new life for existing buildings' category from the Highlands and Islands Architectural Association's annual awards event, .hiaa . The commendation was given for our work to covert nunton steadings in Benbecula into a working distillery for North Uist Distillery. The steadings is a 18th century 'B' listed building and a huge amount of work has been carried out by the design team, the client and the contractors to realise this careful conversion.

The project includes a visitor centre, shop, tasting room and working distillery for whisky and gin production. The fit out of the production room in particular has been an immense challenge; doors had to be widened, the uneven floor leveled and the gin stills hoisted in from an opening created in the roof. Externally a lime render specialist has given the steadings a lovely new render coating. Ballachuillish slates were donated from members of the community and roof repairs were carried out.

It's always an absolute pleasure to work with the team at and to see the business thriving at nunton. Also fantastic to see their recent award of Scottish Gin Distillery of the Year for the third year running!

The design team included Allen Associates , Total Design (Lighthill) Ltd, Doig and Smith and Horizon M and E. The main contractor for the works was Angus MacDonald Building Contractor (Kyles) with Allen Associates carrying out the specialist distillery fit out. Studio Vans designed and made the beautiful bespoke plywood furniture for the shop and bar.

Phase 2 of the project is underway just now to improve pedestrian access to the building and carry out landscaping works in the courtyard.

Congratulations to all the other entrants in the awards scheme, the standard was incredibly high and it's great to see so many great projects in the Highlands and Islands region.

It's been a really wild and windy couple of weeks here in Uist and we've been enjoying designing cosy and calming spaces for a new build house project in Lewis. This particular design features an open plan living and dining area with a mezzanine studio above which connects to the master bedroom via a gallery bridge. The staircase wraps around the back of the stove and natural light spills in through roof lights and picture windows facing the nearby shoreline. The interior space is given warmth through the use of natural materials and furnishings. A planning application has been submitted and we're looking forward to taking this project forward in 2024.

We're delighted to be on board as project architects with Tagsa Uibhist for the new proposals to create a community food hub at the community garden in Balivanich. The design concept is to create a modern walled garden with a vibrant painted mural wall forming the back of the hub building and the adjacent outdoor covered market; the mural wall will provide much needed shelter for social spaces and for planting to the south. Outdoor seating and cooking areas are provided under the shelter of the roof and planting and gathering spaces also emerge out to the front of the building and into the garden.

​Plans for a new community food hub and covered outdoor market in Balivanich have reached a significant milestone, with the submission of a formal planning application.

It's been a beautiful cold and crisp start to the year here in North Uist. We are looking forward to seeing the completion of this new build house in 2024. The interior fittings are taking shape and the exterior fabric is now complete.
We'll be sharing more images of what's on the drawing board in the coming weeks. We've also been working on a new website and will share this soon when it goes live.

Work is nearing completion for this renovation and extension project. The new extension features an open plan living and dining area overlooking a sandy cove. A large opening has been formed in the stone wall of the existing croft house to connect the kitchen and new living space. V lining marks the transition through the opening from old to new. The first floor dormer windows have been extended to bring in more daylight. Traditional v lining is used on all the window ingoes as a nod to the traditional finishes of the past. The extension is clad in larch which will weather to a silver grey to tie in with the stone of the existing house. Just the final fittings and decoration to complete and it's ready for moving in.

A cracking blue sky day to see the larch cladding turning silver grey to match the tones of the natural stone cladding on this recently completed house. The gable end glazing frames the hills of north and south Lee to the east.

Work is progressing well on site for this new build single storey house. The timber cladding is complete and the blockwork walls to the front elevation are ready for their stone cladding The low profile roof nestles into the hillside to the rear of the house and the expansive windows take in the beautiful shoreline views to the front.
