Yesterday morning we received a call saying that the board has tripped and could we attend asap? We didn’t expect to be greeted with such a state…
Luckily for this customer they had an upfront RCD on the installation that had tripped, because the fuse wire was unbelievably still intact in the burnt out fuse, had it not been for the RCD this property could of potentially ended up with bigger issues than no power.
We carried out a full eicr and swapped out the consumer unit for an 18th edition metal clad RCBO DB with SPD - this installation is now safe for continued use.
3036 consumer units are notorious for not achieving disconnection times and typically can operate at 1.45x there rating for 4 hours, in this instance 43A, on 2.5mmm cables rated at max 27a when clipped direct, this can lead to total deterioration of the system.
If you have a fuseboard like the one in the picture, please make sure you get your installation checked by a registered / competent electrician, periodic inspection should be every 10 years however on systems showing age of around 40/50 years like this one we would recommend more regular intervals, however the best solution would be to upgrade your consumer unit.
