The grant is paid through a voucher. We apply for it as soon as you accept your proposal, and its value is fixed on the day we apply. The installation doesn't need to be finished first.

And if Ofgem gets in touch to check we're acting for you, reply the same day. No voucher is issued until you do.

This South Kensington penthouse has no radiators and no air conditioning units on the walls, and it's still heated and cooled.

It runs on a Unico system: an air source heat pump sending warm or cool air through hidden ducts to small, discreet vents. We're one of five Unico installers in the South East, and our founder Martyn explains how it works.

You may have seen stories about the government trimming the heat pump grant budget. Nothing has been announced.

If the grant per home does change, the scheme's rules mean there has to be at least 28 days' notice first, so it can't happen overnight.

If a heat pump is on your list for the next year, now is a good time to book the survey.

Before anything is specified on a project like this one, every room is measured for the heat it needs.

Those numbers do real work. They set the flow rate to each zone at the underfloor heating manifold, so every room gets what it requires, not what somebody estimated.

Done properly, the house balances itself. Our engineer's line is that in theory you would not even need thermostats.

This flat sits on a central London street that queues twice a day. The owner put heat recovery ventilation in for the air quality.

What he talks about now is that the windows stay shut. The flat is quieter, and nobody walking past hears what is said inside it.

He calls it an unexpected bonus. If you live on a road like this one, it may be worth as much as the air.

We went back to a house in Vauxhall two years after installing a heat pump and solar panels, to ask the owner what he had learnt.

His answer was about timing. He heats the house while electricity is cheap, then drops the target by a couple of degrees through the expensive hours. Underfloor heating responds slowly, so he does not feel the drop, and it comes back up on its own.

Asked for his biggest learning in two years: he set it up once and has left it alone.

Heat recovery ventilation removes pollen, dust and particulates as standard. What it does not remove on its own is the gases coming off the traffic.

This flat is on a busy central London street, and clean air was the reason the owner wanted the system at all. So a second carbon filter was added to the supply side, before the air reaches any room in the flat.

If the road outside is why you are considering ventilation, that second stage is the thing to ask about.

Most people think a home battery is about storing sunshine. It is really about which hours of the day you buy your electricity in.

On this house the day rate is around 36p a unit and the overnight rate on a time of use tariff is around 8p. Panels alone still leave you buying the expensive hours every evening. With storage you charge overnight in winter and run on your own solar in summer.

15 panels and 20 kilowatt hours of storage, fitted in Cobham.

One of our own team had solar and battery storage fitted at his house in Cobham, and a few weeks later he opened his energy app on camera.

Before: around £80 to £90 a week. The week after: £13. Most days since: 3 or 4 pence. And the export payments were not even set up yet.

These are his own figures for his own house, read in April. Yours will be different, which is why we model your home before anyone talks about price.

Every installer the client spoke to said it could not be done. A ground source heat pump in a west London house with no access to the garden.

The answer: a road closure, 26 suspended parking bays, and a 180 tonne crane lifting a 7 tonne drilling rig over the house. It now heats the swimming pool, the jacuzzi, the underfloor heating and the hot water.
