Comfortable bar-level seating brings the familiar pleasure of pulling up a stool into the home. It creates another place to host, talk and have a drink, while the generous upholstery makes it easy for the evening to carry on. The bar feels polished enough for an occasion, but relaxed enough to become part of everyday life.

Like any good shelving, a bar should elevate the things it holds. Here, the cabinetry protects the bottles from direct sunlight while carefully integrated lighting allows the glass, colour and contents to shine. The collection becomes part of the interior, adding sparkle, depth and a little glamour.

The home bar with its built-in shelving looks as at home here as it would in one of Mayfair’s chicest hotels. The red tones of the timber and stone bring warmth to the room, while liquid-metal finishes add a sharper, more elevated edge. Together, they give the bar a strong sense of character without losing the inviting atmosphere that makes people want to settle in, “order” another drink and stay a little longer.

We wanted to bring the atmosphere of a chic central London cocktail bar into the home. Downstairs of the main living and dining spaces, the bar naturally moves the evening on, giving guests somewhere to gather for a drink once dinner ends and the pace becomes a little more relaxed. Rich materials, warm lighting and a more intimate setting give it a character of its own while keeping it connected to the rest of the house.

The lower-ground floor of this south London family home is a place to have a bit more fun with the space. A billiards table and piano create room for hobbies, entertaining and slower evenings at home, while full-height glazing and doors onto the patio keep the space bright and connected to the outdoors during the day. As the light changes, so does the mood, becoming warmer and more intimate in the evening without ever feeling like a traditional basement.

This wider living area in Notting Hill was designed to feel like an escape within the city. Bespoke joinery brings order and architectural presence, while the Verde Alpi marble fireplace introduces a striking focal point that still sits comfortably within the room’s warm, grounded palette. Together with the natural earth tones running throughout the apartment, the space offers a more comforting vision of urban living: somewhere to decompress, reset and feel at ease at the end of the day.

Natural earth tones have long had the power to make a room feel calmer, warmer and more settled, and this Notting Hill apartment shows exactly why. Featured by , the project reflects Brian Woulfe’s approach to creating city interiors that feel restorative as well as elegant, using materiality, tone and bespoke design to turn an apartment into a genuine place of retreat after the pace of the working day.

No Brown in Town?

There may once have been “no brown in town,” but this Notting Hill flat makes a strong case against it. In the living room, a bespoke coffee table brings warmth, depth and character through its beautifully figured wood grain and rich finish, grounding the space in natural earth tones that feel both comforting and quietly refined. It is a reminder that the right materials and palette can soften city living, creating an interior that feels less like a backdrop and more like a place to properly unwind.

A bedroom should offer somewhere to spend time, not only somewhere to sleep. A sitting area gives this principal suite another purpose: a private place to read, enjoy a coffee or take a few moments alone, away from the shared rooms of the house. Thoughtful bedroom planning allows these smaller routines to have a setting of their own, making the suite feel more generous through how it is used, rather than its size alone.
