Planning a rear extension? Before you choose bigger windows, ask yourself one important question.
Will the room feel comfortable all year round?
Large glazed doors and windows can make a huge difference to a home.
They can bring more natural light into your kitchen, open up views of the garden and make the whole space feel brighter and more connected to the outdoors.
But as we head towards November, it’s worth thinking beyond how your extension will look on a sunny day.
How will it feel on a cold winter morning?
Will the glazing specification help keep the room comfortable?
Could direct sunlight make the space too warm during summer?
And is the position of the windows helping you get the most from the available daylight?
There isn’t one perfect amount of glazing for every home.
The right solution depends on the layout, orientation, insulation, glazing specification and how you want to use the space.
That’s why these decisions are best considered during the design stage, rather than left until the windows are being ordered.
A beautiful rear extension should look good, feel comfortable and work for your family in every season.
If you were planning a rear extension, would you choose large glazed doors to maximise the garden view, or smaller windows to create a more solid, private feel? Why?
