THE LANDS BY CAPELLA, SYDNEY

The Lands by Capella demanded a balanced lighting approach: restoring new life to an important piece of Sydney’s history using contemporary technology, while complimenting the stunning architectural composition & detailing.

Our lighting was deliberately quiet. Bespoke fittings in dark bronze and frosted glass sit alongside the original plasterwork, timber joinery and beautiful arched windows, while existing light locations were reused wherever possible to minimise impact on the heritage fabric.

Discrete integration of lighting and services into architectural elements allows the building’s timeless beauty to reveal itself.
We're incredibly proud to have been part of this significant project, and even more so to see it recognised with four 2026 NSW awards, including the Greenway Award for Heritage at the AIA NSW Architecture Awards.

How do you make a space no larger than a bed feel open, comfortable and inviting?⁣
⁣
For Otherwander’s first hotel in Soho, our lighting design focused on creating a sense of space beyond the pod itself. A diffused "window" effect, combined with custom lighting scenes inspired by the changing tones of the sky, allows guests to personalise their environment throughout the day.⁣
⁣
From crisp daylight blues and warm sunset ambers to simple white light for reading, RGBW pixel LED technology provides the perfect atmosphere for every moment.⁣
⁣
Beyond the pods, the guest experience continues through beautifully designed communal spaces. Warm indirect lighting and an immersive audio soundscape create a calming, spa-like environment within the shared bathrooms, while dynamic RGBW lighting transforms the staircase and huddle lounge into vibrant social spaces.⁣
⁣
At certain moments throughout the day, the ground-floor lounge shifts into something unexpected, with the ambient lighting fading to let the RGBW installation take centre stage.⁣

One of our highlights was seeing the installation by .emotionallight in person -a floating mesh pendant illuminated to almost defy gravity. We also loved the use of natural materials throughout the exhibition spaces, bringing a real tactile quality to each environment.⁣
⁣
We finished the day at alongside talks from and discussing how AI is shaping the future of design workflows and creative thinking.⁣

A busy, open market space set inside the Old Power Station at the

Our lighting brings structure to the space, with a warm overall glow and more focused light to highlight vendors, bars and key areas.

We kept things simple, working with the building’s industrial character and keeping the ceiling as clean as possible.

As the day moves into evening, the lighting shifts to feel warmer and more relaxed, supporting a more social atmosphere.

Outside, a subtle approach helps the building stand out without overdoing it.

This is a full-time hybrid role, working closely with Directors and our global studios. You’ll lead project delivery from concept through to completion, develop lighting concepts, produce documentation, and support projects through to site and commissioning.

We’re looking for someone with 5+ years’ experience in lighting design, with strong hospitality and commercial project experience.

We’re proud to announce the promotion of Chris Page to Studio Leader - Melbourne.

Since joining FPOV in 2018, Chris has been a driving force within the studio, bringing a distinctive perspective shaped by his background in theatre lighting and his studies in Architectural Science (Illumination) at the University of Sydney.

Working across both lighting and AV design, Chris has led projects with clarity and precision, while also playing a key role in advancing our global CAD standards, specifications, and technology.

Respected by clients and genuinely valued by the team, this promotion reflects both his contribution to date and the leadership he brings to the studio.
