Solar panels provide an ideal habitat for feral pigeons which often roost and nest beneath them. Here the Total IPM team have been asked to provide a robust solution to pigeon proof these solar panels. The system needed to be easy to remove and reinstate if ever required to allow for full maintenance to the panels.

German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)

Identification
Light brown/tan, 10–15 mm long.

Two dark parallel stripes behind the head.

Climbs smooth surfaces using sticky foot pads.

Fully winged but cannot fly.

Reproduction
Females produce 4–8 egg cases, each containing 30–40 eggs.

Egg cases are carried until just before hatching.

Populations can increase to thousands within a year.

Habitat & Diet
Cannot survive UK winters outdoors; lives indoors only.

Favours warm, humid areas (20–33°C) such as kitchens, bathrooms, boiler rooms, and behind appliances.

Nocturnal scavenger feeding on food debris, grease, paper, leather, and other organic materials.

Health Risks
Can spread bacteria including Salmonella and E. coli.

Droppings, shed skins, and saliva can trigger asthma and allergic reactions.

🦅 HAWK ATTACK!!! 🚨

Thats what you might think seeing the start of this footage. Using Harris hawks like the amazing Winnie here is actually an environmentally 🌱 friendly way to deter pest birds, using the natural deterrent of the hawk to encourage feral pigeons and other pest birds to vacate an area.

When carried out regularly at the right time of day the the flying of hawks can effectively disperse pest birds that believe the area has become unsafe with an airborne predator in residence.

One of the more interesting things we have found in our bait stations while doing our routine checks!

We have absolutely no idea how this little toad found it's way into the middle of a commercial kitchen in the middle of a building with no doors leading outside.

Facts about this little character

Common name: Common toad, European toad

Scientific name: Bufo bufo

Family: Bufonidae (toads)

Habitat: woodland, grassland and gardens as adults. Ponds as tadpoles.

Diet: Invertebrates, smaller amphibians, even small mammals

Predators: carnivorous mammals like otters and hedgehogs, grass snakes, herons, birds of prey.

When it’s scared or threatened, the warts on its back secrete a vile-tasting substance – its defence against predators.
