Heather (.s.young) has made a beautiful card model of our project for St. Clement’s Church on Fulham Palace Road, which was recently granted planning permission.

The scheme imagines the completion of a small but nearly perfectly formed brick chapel that in our opinion was crying out for a new setting in scalloped brick to marry in with the existing.

A series of images showing the design approach for an unrealised new-build house. The plot was on a large, prominent and featureless site so we wanted to develop an idea for the house that would make it a familiar form in the landscape.

1 - 2. We were inspired by spinneys and copses - groupings of trees in open fields - and sought to translate this into an architectural response.

3. Our architecture holds lots of ideas and nuance, but we always look to distill the essence of the project into a series of simple diagrams. The building evokes the form of the copse through a heavy canopy supported on slender columns which provides shelter and shading to the large areas of south facing glazing on the ground floor.

4. The ground floor has solid walls addressing the north that accommodate the plant and utility spaces and opens up to the south with the plan form being manipulated to address key views, which are given over to the main living spaces.

5. A small pop-up on the first floor provides a principal bedroom suite with elevated views over the landscape and access to a roof terrace. Cut-outs within the canopy allow for trees to be integrated within the architecture, and circular rooflights bring natural to light in some of the landlocked spaces.

6. AI doing it’s thing on an old sketch (you can see the original from Nov 22, if you can be bothered to scroll back that far).

A few photos of our model of Villa DW, a proposal containing a mixed tenure of housing and accompanying civic functions including swimming pools, gardens, a theatre, light industry, gardens and a chicken coop.

Designed to be located on the fringes of the city of Glasgow, Villa DW is modelled on historic walled cities, Alvar Aalto’s Savoy range of glassware and the contents of your jacket pockets (see Will Alsop’s idea that there are few projects that can not be formally configured using only the contents of your jacket pockets). The model combines CNC’d birch ply, 3D printing and laser cut acrylic.
