Heckmann Design Studio Gallery is pleased to announce Fragile Dreams, a retrospective exhibition of work by British fashion designer and artist Abe Hamilton, opening on 14 May 2026 and continuing through mid-September.

Bringing together a selection of garments spanning Hamilton’s career, alongside a body of drawings drawn from the artist’s own archive and private collections, the exhibition examines the relationship between fashion, process, and artistic expression at the core of his practice. Many of the works included are being exhibited publicly for the first time and have been loaned to the Gallery for the duration of the exhibition.

Widely recognised for his contribution to fashion, and particularly London, in the 1990s, Hamilton developed a distinct visual language characterised by refined cuts, natural materials, fluid movement and an ethereal sensibility. Whilst there is lightness and transparency in the designs of his garments, there is also empowerment in the freedom of movement, honesty, and themes connecting to nature.

Fragile Dreams places Hamilton’s garments in dialogue with the drawings that informed their conception, revealing the emotional and conceptual foundations of his design process. The exhibition highlights the close relationship between the mark-making and the innovation of the finished pieces, underscoring the breadth of Hamilton’s practice beyond fashion alone.

The exhibition will also feature works by photographers whose images helped define the visual culture of the 1990s, including Martyn Thomson and Nick Otley. Their photographs, produced for leading editorial publications of the period, provide further context for Hamilton’s work and reflect the enduring influence of the decade’s aesthetic.

Reconsidered today, Hamilton’s early pioneering ideas in sustainability, in resistance to fast fashion, and in creating from grounded concepts and deeper meanings - ought to be more poignant than ever, more relevant, and urgent.  Fragile Dreams positions this work not only as historically significant, but as increasingly relevant to contemporary conversations around fashion, authorship and cultural value.

Alexander Pemberton, the painter behind this gorgeous artwork, works only on location, never from photographs. In each of his paintings, whether it is an urban landscape painted along the river Thames or the trees in one of Londons parks, Alexander captures the light in that moment, that filters through to us, the observers, and it is magical. The artist forces us to appreciate our surroundings by showing us the beauty that he finds in the London scenes. Please, visit our studio gallery to view Alex's works in person, on until end of February. N1 4PR. For any enquiries, DM or contact [email protected]
