LONDON CRIME IS FALLING. BUT DOES IT FEEL SAFER?

Last week, I saw something in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, that genuinely surprised me. Two police officers walking the beat.

In approximately two years, that’s the first time I’ve personally seen officers patrolling that particular area on foot. My jaw nearly hit the floor.

It’s common to see diplomatic protection vehicles around Mayfair, but their primary responsibility is very different from general neighbourhood policing.

Having spent many years working in protective security around London, assessing the changing threat environment is something we do every day. And there’s one question I keep coming back to.

Are London’s streets genuinely becoming safer, or are we placing too much confidence in the statistics?

Were regularly told that crime is falling, and if that’s the case, its certainly welcome news. But Mayfair has seen some serious incidents involving luxury-watch robberies, people being followed after leaving restaurants and organised groups targeting wealthy visitors. And those are the incidents we actually hear about.

What about the incidents that never make the news, or aren’t even reported to the police?

My concern is that positive crime statistics, while encouraging, can create a false sense of security if people interpret them as meaning the risks have disappeared. Complacency can create opportunities for criminals.

Id be particularly interested in hearing from serving and former Metropolitan Police officers, as well as those working in security and hospitality around Mayfair. Are the reported reductions in crime reflected in what youre actually seeing on the ground?

Or is there a growing difference between the statistics and peoples everyday experiences?

Not every wealthy family needs Close Protection.

It might sound unusual coming from a security company, but wealth alone doesn’t determine the level of protection someone needs.

The first question shouldn’t be:

“How much security do you need?”

It should be:

“What are we actually protecting you from?”

For some families, the answer may be Close Protection. For others, it could be residential security, a more discreet approach during certain movements, or simply better planning and sensible protective measures.

Sometimes, no additional security may be necessary at all.

Because more security doesn’t always mean better security.

The best security is proportionate to the risk, adapts when circumstances change and allows people to continue living their lives as normally as possible.

The best security isn’t the most security.
It’s the right security.

WHAT IS A BODYGUARD DOING WHILE THE CLIENT IS IN A MEETING?

On a larger Close Protection operation, responsibilities can be divided across a team. Different people may be dealing with the principal, vehicles, routes, venues, advance work and communications.

But many private clients don’t travel with a full Close Protection team. They may have one bodyguard/PPO working directly with them.

A client goes into a meeting for two hours. To anyone watching, their bodyguard may appear to be simply waiting outside.

They’re probably doing anything but.

While the client is in the meeting, the bodyguard is already thinking about what happens when they walk out.

They may be communicating with the client’s EA or PA, coordinating with the chauffeur, confirming timings with the next venue and making sure everyone who needs to know is working from the same plan.

They’re checking the next route and alternatives, traffic or disruption, suitable emergency locations along the way, where the vehicle needs to be positioned and how the next arrival will work.

At the same time, they’re maintaining awareness of the client’s current location.

And then plans change.

The meeting finishes 30 minutes early. It runs an hour late. The next appointment moves. The restaurant changes. Or the client decides they want to go somewhere that wasn’t on the programme.

Everything has to adjust.

That’s the reality of working as an individual bodyguard. The plan can change constantly, and you have to stay ahead of it.

It’s also why being 6’5”, heavily built and looking intimidating isn’t a prerequisite for the role.

In many of the environments private clients move through, standing out can actually be the opposite of what you want.

A good bodyguard should be able to blend into a five-star hotel, restaurant, private members’ club or business environment without immediately advertising to everyone around them that they’re security.

The chauffeur is waiting. The route has been considered. The next venue is expecting them. Everyone who needs to know has been updated.

Some of the most vulnerable moments in a journey happen when you think the journey is over.

l’ve been reading about a series of high-value luggage thefts around King’s Cross and St Pancras involving travellers carrying high-value luggage.

In one case, a family had arrived at St Pancras on the Eurostar and were getting into their vehicle. While their luggage was being loaded, one man distracted the driver while another took two suitcases reportedly containing more than £600,000 worth of belongings.

CCTV later showed the offenders had been scouting the area.
From a security perspective, I think this highlights something that’s often overlooked.

Transitions create vulnerability.

Getting out of a vehicle, entering a hotel, leaving a restaurant, moving through an airport or railway station, arriving home.
They’re completely ordinary moments, but they’re also moments when attention is often divided.

The principal is moving. The chauffeur may be dealing with luggage. Doors and boots are open. Someone may be checking an itinerary or speaking with hotel staff.

Everyone is concentrating on what happens next rather than who might be watching now.

Good protective security isn’t simply about having someone standing beside the principal. It’s about understanding where vulnerabilities exist throughout a journey and reducing them without making the client feel surrounded by security.
Sometimes that means a CPO.

Sometimes it’s an experienced chauffeur who understands security and recognises when something doesn’t look right.
Sometimes it’s simply better planning.

The few minutes between A and B can matter just as much as A and B themselves.

*What happens when the principal says “No”?*

In most situations, a Close Protection Officer advises, recommends and adapts. Ultimately, the client decides how they want to live their life.

Good protection shouldn’t mean controlling someone’s movements or constantly telling them what they can and can’t do.

But what happens when the situation changes?

An operative identifies what they believe is an immediate threat and says:

“We need to leave. Now.”

The principal refuses.

At what point do you stop advising and start acting?

Physically moving the person you’re employed to protect against their wishes is a significant decision.

Get it right and you may have prevented them from being seriously injured, or worse.

Get it wrong and you could damage the relationship with the client or potentially end your position.

But hesitate when immediate action was required, and the consequences could be far greater.

This is where judgement matters.

Qualifications, training and experience are all important. But there may come a moment when there is no perfect procedure and only seconds to make a decision.

Good Close Protection isn’t about controlling how somebody lives.

It’s about knowing when to advise, when to adapt, and, in the rarest circumstances, when you may have to act.

How many people know where your principal will be tomorrow?

A PA may hold the itinerary. A chauffeur knows the collection point. The hotel knows the booking. An aviation provider knows the arrival time. Restaurants, event organisers, household staff and other third parties may all hold different pieces of the same journey.

None of this is unusual. But when those pieces are combined, a private client’s movements can become far less private than they realise.

Protective security isn’t only about what happens when a principal arrives somewhere. It also means considering who needs to know their movements, what information is being shared, and when.

Sometimes protecting a journey starts long before the principal gets into the vehicle.
