Design Principal Jorey "Shosh" Friedman sat down with long-term collaborator and friend of the firm, EDSA Senior Principal Rich Centolella, to discuss the design process behind Nekajui, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve and a partnership that has spanned generations and hundreds of projects together.

"Our founding partners worked together, and our second-generation partners have all worked together. I've worked with 10 Design for at least 35 years of my 40 years at EDSA," says Rich. "When you've worked together that long and you have the same culture, the same respect for one another, the same process for how you approach a project, it becomes really easy to work together."

A new addition to one of the Caribbean's most beloved resorts, The Westerly at Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & The Westerly has officially opened.

Striking pure white forms punctuated by floor-to-ceiling openings reflect the property's historic architectural character while embracing its waterfront setting. Every room offers an ocean view, with 18 beachfront suites anchoring the building's end caps. At ground level, on-grade suites are supported by a continuous plunge pool.

The showpiece is Terrace 10, an adults-only rooftop lounge with panoramic views of the Aruba coastline. By day, it functions as a wellness retreat; by night, it transforms into an entertainment hub offering live music, craft cocktails and local cuisine.

The landscape, designed by EDSA, ties it all together with tropical plantings and thoughtful pedestrian connections. Interiors by Jeffrey Beers International complete the picture with a contemporary take on mid-century modern, grounded in natural textures that echo the island's landscape.

The most successful projects become part of everyday life by giving people new reasons to return.

At Beicheng Paradise Walk, a recent "Spring Awakening" pop-up turned part of the plaza into a floral meadow, styled as a garden Monet would be proud of. It's a use for nearly 800 square metres of indoor and outdoor space we designed into the scheme, built to give the destination room for pop-ups, art exhibitions and festivals to rotate through.

When we talk about designing with agility, this is what we mean. We build spaces that respond to what the local community needs next. Retail, dining, events like this or something nobody's even thought of yet.

Physical retail isn't dying. It's shifting with consumer expectations, and experience is setting the pace.

Chongqing Beicheng Paradise Walk was Longfor Group's first-ever retail development. Two decades later, we've given it a new life: a "Symphony of Glass and Stone" that reconnects the mall with the city's surrounding natural landscape. What was once a retail landmark is now a vibrant lifestyle hub, combining leisure, dining, entertainment, retail and social spaces.

“The design showcases the dynamic resonance between commercial space and urban spirit, ultimately creating a public space that strengthens civic identity and a sense of shared ownership for Chongqing residents,” says our Design Principal Peby Pratama.

How do you turn an indoor ski resort into somewhere everyone wants to be?

When we started designing Qianhai Snow World, the brief asked for the "world's largest indoor ski centre" and one that would become a must-visit for ski enthusiasts across the region.

We designed a mixed-use development that brings together retail, entertainment, a hotel, office space, and civic space. A destination built for skiers, but with all of the amenities and activities to appeal to all.

Beneath the 400-metre ski slope sits CityWild, a semi-outdoor retail and leisure zone that has recently opened, bringing us one step closer to that vision. Built into the surrounding structures, CityWild brings together a mix of indoor and outdoor sport and entertainment: a 33-metre-deep diving centre, an indoor surfing centre, a rock-climbing studio, a ninja training gym, plus cycling and karting tracks running through the development. This is now a 24-hour activity hub and a shared playground where niche communities gather, connect, and grow.

Nine months in, the ski centre has welcomed over one million visitors from across the region, and the lifestyle communities around it are only getting started. As the JW Marriott and more businesses open later this year, they'll bring even more life to the spaces, serving global travellers and residents alike.
