Project Completion: St Andrew's Church, Enfield

We're delighted to announce the completion of the Tower Roof and Parapet Repairs at St Andrew's Church, Enfield.

Over seven months, essential conservation work was carried out to the Grade II* listed church's 14th-century tower. The project replaced the failing asphalt roof with a traditional lead roof, alongside extensive repairs to the historic timber roof structure. The opportunity was also taken to repair the dilapidated parapet walls, addressing the risk of falling masonry and helping to secure the tower's future.

A particularly rewarding aspect of the project was the introduction of three new Green Man grotesques, replacing original carvings that had weathered away beyond repair. Carefully designed to complement the church's historic character, these new carvings celebrate the building's rich heritage while creating a lasting legacy for future generations.

While modest in scale, this project marks an important first step in the ongoing conservation of a key local heritage asset, helping to secure the future of this remarkable landmark at the heart of the community.

The work was carried out by the fantastic team at d. We are incredibly grateful for their skill, dedication, and craftsmanship throughout the project.

Project Update – St Mary, Somers Town

Repairs to the west end of St Mary’s Church are progressing well. The impressive new pinnacles have now been installed and are crowned with finely crafted new finials, marking a significant milestone in the project.

The Grade II-listed church had been facing serious challenges, including the threat of closure and demolition. This phase of works addresses the most urgent repairs to the west front, including stonework conservation, repointing, and careful cleaning of the historic fabric. The project has also provided the opportunity to restore the church clock face, ensuring this important local landmark can continue to serve the community.

These essential conservation works will pave the way for future phases of restoration, helping to secure the long-term future of the building and ultimately return the church to its former glory for the benefit of all who use and enjoy it.

The completed west façade is expected to be unveiled to the public by the end of August 2026.

We are grateful for the support of Heritage at Risk Capital Fund, whose contribution has made this vital project possible.

Project Update – St John’s, Notting Hill

Work is now underway to uncover the original hand-painted decoration on the south aisle ceiling StJohn NottingHill

The beautiful Victorian decorative scheme was concealed beneath a dark brown overpaint applied during the 1960s. Previous investigations within the church have already revealed a wealth of historic hand-painted decoration, including the nave ceiling, chancel ceiling and upper walls, as well as the chancel arch.

The current conservation project will uncover and restore the full extent of the south aisle ceiling decoration, allowing this significant part of the church’s Victorian interior to be appreciated once again. The project is expected to be completed by September 2026.

This work forms part of the ongoing programme to reveal, conserve, and celebrate the rich decorative heritage of St John’s, Notting Hill.
