Last Friday, Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG) Directors Lee Campbell, Tobo Yianni and Adrian Murray had the pleasure of visiting valued supply chain partners, IG Masonry Support.

A huge thank you to Andy Neal & Scott Denham for the invite, and to Simon Billyeald, Marcus Emmerson, Katie Bowen, Andy Sharlot and Daniel Smeed for making us feel so welcome and taking the time to show us around.

It was a genuinely insightful visit, giving us a real appreciation of what goes into the design and manufacture of IG's market-leading masonry support systems, B.O.S.S. systems and many other innovative products.

What stood out immediately was the sheer scale of the operation, the exceptional organisation throughout the business and the incredibly slick, well-managed processes at every stage of production. The level of investment, planning and attention to detail was evident wherever we looked.

Having so much of the manufacturing process under one roof and under the direct control of IG provides an impressive level of flexibility. That flexibility translates directly into outstanding customer service, shorter lead times and the ability to respond quickly to clients' requirements.

Perhaps even more impressive was IG's commitment to investing in people. In an era where many manufacturers are moving towards greater automation and robotics, it was refreshing to see the emphasis placed on employing and developing local people. Every member of the team we met demonstrated a genuine "can-do" attitude and a strong team ethos, creating a culture that was clearly visible throughout the business.

It was also fascinating to see the significant ongoing investment being made into the future of the company, including their impressive in-house brick cutting facility and continuous investment in technology, equipment and manufacturing capabilities.

Thank you once again to everyone at IG Masonry Support for such an informative and enjoyable day. We came away having learned a great deal and with an even greater appreciation of the expertise, innovation and commitment that goes into supporting our industry.

We look forward to continuing our excellent working relationship for many years to come.

Following on from our post this yesterday morning about Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG)'s Summer 2026 Apprenticeship Drive, it was fantastic to read yesterdayโ€™s article in the Construction Enquirer highlighting new Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Smart Check data showing that more than one in four people now entering our industry are under the age of 30.

It's encouraging to see respected industry publications, such as Construction Enquirer, shining a light on positive stories like this.

For many years, construction has battled the perception that young people simply aren't interested in our industry. These latest figures suggest otherwise and demonstrate that the collective efforts of employers, colleges, schools, local authorities and industry bodies are beginning to make a real difference.

At Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG), this has never been about statistics.

For more than 25 years, we've continued to invest in apprenticeships, mentoring, work experience, school engagement and creating genuine career opportunities for local people. Many of today's managers, supervisors and even members of our senior leadership team began their careers with us as apprentices.

Seeing more young people choosing construction is incredibly positive, but our work is far from finished. As an industry, we must continue investing in the next generation, creating opportunities and demonstrating that construction offers rewarding, long-term careers with genuine prospects for progression.

A big thank you to the Construction Enquirer for continuing to champion the positive stories within our industry and for highlighting the importance of attracting and developing the workforce of tomorrow.

Together, we're helping to build not just better buildings, but a stronger future for UK construction.

Four weeks ago, we shared how our Chairman, Liveryman and Craft Committee Member of the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers, Tony Yianni, continues to champion careers in construction through his ongoing visits to schools and colleges across London, encouraging the next generation to consider our fantastic industry.

Today, we're pleased to say those conversations are already turning into opportunities.

Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG)'s Summer 2026 Apprenticeship Drive is now well and truly underway.

Following Tony's recent programme of school and college visits, we were delighted to welcome the first cohort of students from the borough of Westminster City Council to our head office last week, where they met with office staff, former Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG) apprentices and members of our management team to discuss careers, apprenticeships and the many opportunities available within London's construction industry.

This is just the beginning.

Over the coming weeks, we look forward to welcoming further cohorts from the London Boroughs of Haringey Council, London Borough of Bromley and London Borough of Hounslow, reflecting our continued commitment to investing in the communities in which we work and the projects we are delivering.

This initiative forms part of our ongoing commitment to delivering meaningful Section 106 social value, particularly through our involvement at The Lazari Building, 63 New Bond Street, where we are proud to be working alongside Faithdean Plc, Lazari and Gardiner & Theobald LLC. Creating genuine opportunities, opening doors and connecting local people with long-term careers in construction is exactly what social value should be about.

At Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG), we've believed for more than 25 years that our responsibility extends beyond the buildings we construct. Developing people, creating careers and investing in the future of our industry is just as important as delivering quality projects.

We would like to thank our education partners, clients and project teams for helping make these opportunities possible, and we look forward to meeting many more aspiring construction professionals throughout the summer.

Because the greatest legacy we leave isn't just the buildings we createโ€”it's the careers we help build.

Yesterdayโ€™s Mail on Sunday article highlighting bricklaying as one of the careers least likely to be replaced by AI was fantastic to see.

For too long, skilled trades have been underestimated, with construction not always receiving the recognition it deserves within parts of the education system. Yet they offer outstanding earning potential, career progression, job security, and the opportunity to create something that will stand for generations.

At Winchmore Brickwork Group (WBG), weโ€™ve believed in investing in people for decades.

For over 20 years, weโ€™ve proudly worked alongside Hertford Regional College, helping to develop the next generation of bricklayers. Through the foresight of our Chairman, Tony Yianni, and with the continued support of valued supply chain partners, weโ€™ve helped ensure students learn using the same products, materials, tools, and methods they will encounter on site, creating training environments that closely replicate real site conditions.

Today, many of our Directors - Lee, Tobo, and Adrian - Contracts Manager Alfie, Project Manager Chris and many Supervisors & Bricklayers started their careers as apprentices with Winchmore Brickwork Group. Their journeys demonstrate that bricklaying isnโ€™t simply a trade - it can be the foundation of an incredibly rewarding career.

Another hugely positive change has been the increasing diversity of people entering our industry. We are seeing applicants from a far broader range of backgrounds than ever before, bringing fresh perspectives, talent, and ambition. Construction is becoming more representative of the communities we build for, and thatโ€™s something our industry should be proud of.

Social media has also played a major role. Skilled bricklayers with hundreds of thousands of followers are inspiring young people by showcasing the craftsmanship, precision, and pride behind the profession, helping to reshape outdated perceptions of what a career in construction looks like.

Add to that the growing profile of national bricklaying competitions, backed by national merchants, manufacturers and leading suppliers, and it genuinely feels like bricklaying in the UK is on the crest of a wave.

At Winchmore Brickwork Group, Social Value and Section 106 commitments have never been box-ticking exercises. They are embedded in who we are. Developing future talent, supporting education, creating opportunities, and investing in people has always been part of our culture, long before it became a contractual requirement.

The future of our trade looks incredibly bright, and weโ€™re proud to be playing our part in building it. Hereโ€™s to the next generation of bricklayers and to an industry that continues to go from strength to strength.
