RCD Tripping – when the real problem is hidden in the wiring

A recent fault-finding visit was a good example of why repeated RCD tripping should never be treated as simply an “RCD problem”.

The customer reported that the RCD was repeatedly tripping, with the cooker circuit initially suspected as the likely cause.

After carrying out a full investigation, several separate electrical issues were identified.

🔎 What we found:

• The cooker circuit neutral was incorrectly connected to the neutral associated with a different circuit protected by a separate RCD. This created an unwanted neutral connection between circuits and was contributing to the RCD tripping.

• The CPC (Circuit Protective Conductor) to one circuit had been extended using a very poor DIY-style connection. The conductor was also coming into contact with the neutral bar, creating another potential fault condition.

• A kitchen light fitting showed low insulation resistance between neutral and CPC. The fitting was therefore replaced.

• The consumer unit itself had also been installed with far more capacity than was actually required for the installation, with a 15-way board being used for only five circuits. While spare capacity is not inherently a problem, the installation should always be designed appropriately for the actual requirements.

✅ All identified faults were rectified.

The defective light fitting was replaced, the incorrect neutral connection was corrected, the CPC issue was rectified and the installation was fully tested again.

The electrical installation is now operating correctly without the reported RCD tripping.

This is a good reminder that RCD tripping is a symptom, not necessarily the fault itself.

Correct diagnosis requires proper inspection, testing and fault-finding rather than simply replacing the RCD and hoping for the best.

At PowerOn Engineering, we investigate electrical faults systematically to identify the underlying cause and make the installation safe and reliable.

⚠️ Looks can be deceiving. This inspection uncovered a serious safety issue.

This property had a recent Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) carried out by an Approved Contractor.

However, during my investigation I discovered something far more concerning than untidy wiring…

❌ There was NO effective connection to earth from the supply.

This meant I was unable to obtain a valid Ze reading because the installation had no earth provided by the network.

A missing or ineffective earth connection is one of the most serious faults that can exist in an electrical installation. Without a reliable earth path, protective devices may not operate correctly during a fault, significantly increasing the risk of electric shock.

What makes this even more concerning is that the previous report recorded:
✔️ Ze = 0.14 Ω
✔️ 100A supply

…while the actual installation has a 60A service fuse, and the recorded Ze value simply could not be verified because there was no earth present.

This highlights an important point:

👉 An EICR is not about finding easy observations or making a consumer unit look tidy.

It’s about verifying that the installation is safe.

Unfortunately, I often see reports focusing on cosmetic issues while fundamental safety checks are either missed or not properly verified.

As electricians, our responsibility is to protect people — not just complete paperwork.

If you’re buying a property or have concerns about the quality of an electrical inspection, don’t assume that a recent EICR guarantees the installation has been properly tested.

🔧 Today’s job completed!

A customer wanted improved fire protection and a few electrical upgrades, so today’s work included:

✔ Ring circuit extension with a new double socket
✔ Installation of 2 interlinked smoke alarms and 1 heat detector
✔ Testing and certification of the new installation
✔ Removal and decommissioning of an old fire alarm system

The old fire alarm equipment and associated wiring were removed, and the property now benefits from a modern interlinked detection system that provides much better coverage and reliability.

As always, all work was fully tested before completion and the property was left clean and safe.

🚨 Sunday call-out ! Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping? We Found the Problem! 🚨

Today’s job involved a ring circuit that kept tripping the breaker every time power was restored.

After carrying out fault finding, several hidden connection boxes were discovered. Unfortunately, the previous workmanship was poor, with connections incorrectly terminated and junction boxes installed on top of each other. To make matters worse, a recent bathroom leak had allowed water to enter some of the connections, causing further issues.

⚡ What we did:
✅ Located the source of the fault
✅ Opened and inspected all affected connections
✅ Correctly reconnected and secured conductors
✅ Installed suitable maintenance-free / water-resistant connection enclosures
✅ Replaced a faulty socket outlet
✅ Corrected an incorrectly connected outlet
✅ Fully tested the circuit
✅ Restored power and confirmed safe operation

The customer now has a fully functioning ring circuit with no tripping and peace of mind that the installation is safe.

If you’re experiencing tripping breakers, faulty sockets, damaged wiring or mysterious electrical faults, get in touch.
