At HMP Ranby, our CRED programme is showing how purposeful prisoner employment can support rehabilitation while delivering real operational value.

Working alongside the Ministry of Justice UK, HM Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) and the prison leadership team, prisoners gain practical, transferable skills through supervised roles including refurbishment, painting and decorating, stores operations and grounds maintenance.

Key outcomes include:
🟣 £188,053.84 social value generated every month.
🟣 22 prisoners supported through structured work opportunities.
🟣 2,640 purposeful activity hours delivered each month.
🟣 Around 20–22 purposeful activity spaces available during each session.
🟣 Improvements to the prison estate through refurbishment work, decorating, repairs and grounds maintenance.
🟣 Reduced reliance on external contractors, helping deliver better value for money for the Ministry of Justice.

The programme is helping improve prison conditions, build employability skills and provide a scalable model for purposeful activity across the justice estate.

We are looking forward to joining industry leaders at Rail Link Belfast 2026 to discuss the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of rail.

As networks continue to modernise, delivering infrastructure is only part of the challenge. Ensuring new assets and systems are ready to perform in a live operational environment is equally critical.

We are also delighted to share that our Engineering Sector Director, Gert Vermeiren, will be speaking at the conference, sharing lessons from rail electrification programmes and what they can teach us about delivering operational readiness in live rail environments.

Visit us at Stand X1 to meet the team and hear how we are helping clients deliver better rail outcomes through integrated engineering, systems thinking and operational readiness.

Working with Sir Robert McAlpine, we delivered the £27 million A533 Bridge Replacement Scheme for National Highways three months faster than traditional methods, while reducing carbon and minimising disruption for road users and nearby communities.

Key outcomes included:

🟣 250t CO₂e saved through design optimisation and reduced steel use
🟣 Nearly 100% of demolished material recycled and reused locally
🟣 4,982m³ of material repurposed into permanent works, with zero landfill waste
🟣 £20 million in total social value generated
🟣 A new 67-metre bridge constructed off-site and moved into position during planned weekend closures

The scheme has also received multiple industry awards recognising its approach to delivery, sustainability and collaboration.

What happens when employers, charities and the justice sector work together towards the same goal?

At Modernising Criminal Justice 2026, Caprice Roberts and Guy Grant joined Emily Cooke from The Duke of Edinburgh's Award to discuss Step Ahead, an innovative programme supporting young people in custody with practical skills, personal development and pathways into employment.
