Contrasting colours, bright and wild. Small spaces, big statement.

If any room in the house gets to be dramatic, it’s the powder room. There are no rules to follow here, no restraint required. This is where wallpaper gets to be loud, mirrors get to be ornate, and marble gets to do the rest of the talking.

This one leans into all of it. A hand-illustrated wallpaper that doesn’t hold back, an antiqued mirror with real presence, and a hand-carved marble basin that looks like it was always meant to sit here.

Some homes are designed around one strong idea. This one was designed around several, held together by restraint rather than repetition.

The glass-roofed dining room borrows its light from the courtyard outside, letting the boundary between inside and out blur without ever losing definition. Down the hall, the sitting room takes a different register entirely - antique brass, blue velvet, and a wall of framed prints that give the space a quieter, more collected feel. Outside, a pergola threaded with wisteria turns what could have been an ordinary garden into somewhere you’d actually choose to sit.

None of these rooms were built to look the same. They were built to belong to the same conversation, each one answering a different question about how the house should feel.

Embroidered upholstery is one of those details that separates a considered interior from a decorated one. Anyone can choose a beautiful fabric. Far fewer people think to have that fabric hand-worked afterward, with roses and thistles climbing an armrest, shells stitched along the edge of a bench, fringe layered thread by thread until it moves like something alive.

This kind of craft takes time and skill that’s becoming harder to source. A single motif can take a skilled embroiderer days to complete, worked stitch by stitch by hand, long before the piece is ever upholstered onto a frame. It’s not something you can rush, and it’s not something a machine can convincingly replicate. 

But at IWA, this is the kind of specification we care about getting right, not because it’s trend-led, but because it’s the difference between furniture that fills a room and furniture that earns its place in it.

We look up more than most people would think. Ceiling design says as much about a room as anything at eye level, and England’s interiors hold some of the best of it from hand-painted domes, gilded coffering to plasterwork that took months to carve by hand. 

We spend a lot of time studying this kind of detail, not to copy it, but because it teaches you what genuine craftsmanship looks like when it’s had centuries to prove itself.

This is a small collection of what’s caught our eye, the kind of detail we draw on when we’re designing a space that needs to feel considered from every angle.

A little different from our usual project briefs, but one that felt like a natural collaboration.

At Interiors With Art, we design spaces that prioritise wellbeing, health, and a deeper connection to the natural world. So when we were invited to create an artwork for .official, it was an opportunity to explore those values through material innovation.

Showcased at Cass Art as part of SurpRice | Cass Art | Pentagram – Art of Colour & Material, SurpRice is a next-generation material made from rice straw, an agricultural by-product—offering a sustainable leather-like alternative to PVC and PU.

Our design drew inspiration from the geometry of rice fields, while also reflecting one of IWA’s core design principles: celebrating the craftsmanship behind how things are made. The scattered dots represent the farmers whose knowledge, skill, and labour are integral to transforming agricultural waste into this innovative material. By highlighting both the landscape and the makers, the piece celebrates the human process behind material creation as much as the material itself.

Ask any of us at IWA what we look at first on a new piece of furniture and the answer’s almost always the same: the legs. 

Not the fabric, not the finish, the legs. That’s where you can tell if someone actually thought about how a chair sits in a room. 

A bentwood curve, a hand-woven rope seat, an antique with brass inlay, a fully upholstered base that skips the leg altogether. The bottom third of a chair or table tends to carry the most craft and gets looked at the least. This one’s for anyone who scrolls straight past the seat cushion to check the joinery first.

Warm interiors are having a moment right now, but there’s a difference between a room that photographs warm and one that actually feels warm to sit in. This living room is the second kind. The velvet, the walnut, the brass detailing on the pendant, none of it was picked to trend. It was picked because rust and deep wood tones hold their warmth even in London’s grey light, which is the actual problem we’re solving for most of the year.

The screen doors are doing something specific too, filtering light through the space rather than blocking it.

This is the kind of thinking we bring to every project, not just what looks right in a photograph, but what holds up in daily use.

There’s something about a pencil on paper that a screen just can’t replicate. Every idea at IWA starts here, in the hand, before it ever touches a computer. 

You can see a designer thinking in these lines where the light falls, how a room breathes, what gets left out. We think that’s worth protecting.
