Deepdene Wood is a house with real presence. Good bones, familiar materials, a silhouette worth keeping. So the job here isn’t to reinvent it. It’s to hold two things in balance.
On one side, restoring the character: brick, clay tiles, the solidity of the upper floors, the proportions that make it read as one house rather than a series of additions.
On the other, two restrained infill extensions and an oak framed garden room at ground level. Generous glazing, light drawn deeper into the plan, and living spaces that finally open onto the terrace and garden the way they always should have.
Getting that balance right is the whole project. Too much restoration and the house stays closed off from its own garden. Too much intervention and you lose what made it worth keeping.
The elevation is where you test it. Open and grounded at family level, solid and quiet above. New work that feels contemporary, but belongs.
