“Oh my word!” Kevin McCloud on seeing Church Hill Barn.

It was a pleasure to welcome Kevin McCloud to Church Hill Barn for Grand Designs.

We talked about the thinking behind the conversion, and in particular the balance between retaining the character of the original barn and introducing something new.

Church Hill Barn had already won the Sunday Times British Homes Award for Renovation of the Year in 2017, so it was particularly interesting to revisit the project several years later with Kevin.

For me, the project was always about understanding what was already there before deciding what to change.

The building should remain recognisably itself, while being given a new life.
