Do you really need an elephant to squash a tomato?
Wet-setting Altro safety vinyl flooring with AltroFix 19, a two-part polyurethane (PU) adhesive.
Spreading the adhesive is one thing, but getting proper contact and removing trapped air is just as important.
We’re all used to reaching for the heavy floor roller, but not every adhesive works the same way. Sometimes more pressure isn’t the answer!

Altro actually advises against using a heavy roller with AltroFix 19 Plus. Always worth checking the manufacturer’s instructions rather than relying on habit.
Floor layers, what’s your approach? Do you automatically reach for the heavy roller, or does the adhesive determine your method?

Somewhere in London, a politician is watching this and thinking: I TOLD YOU SO!

Well, for this little carpet repair, the politicians might actually have a point?!
Knee kicker, gripper, backpack and off we go. Cruising through London alongside Rolls-Royces and Porsches.
Not sure how tomorrow’s 200m² carpet installation will work, though! 🤣

Everyone sees 7 square metres. I see 15 years of responsibility.

A fellow floor layer asked how I could spend two days installing just 7m² of safety vinyl flooring.

It’s a fair question. Every installer, customer and budget is different.

But quality flooring is only as good as the preparation and workmanship behind it. The best Altro Pisces and adhesive cannot compensate for poor installation.

Materials have set prices and everyone along this supply chain gets the money they ask for but no price can compensate if they’re not paired with skilled hands to put them together.
Skill, experience and responsibility have the most value - AI can’t do this hand work yet, it’s still down to us humans

I’m not saying every wet room needs two days, or that everyone should charge the same. This job simply gave me the time to do it properly—and I’m grateful for that.

The aim isn’t to make the job last longer. It’s to make the floor last longer.

The aim was not to make the job take longer but to make the new floor last longer

Two days fitting a floor that’s expected to last 10-15-20 years. Sounds reasonable to me!

A small 2.5 × 2.5m wet room, but certainly not a small amount of work!

From uplifting the old floor, grinding and repairing the subfloor, walls, cove detailing, fitting and hot welding — every stage deserved proper attention.

And then there was the curved weld…

Rather than taking the obvious straight route, I decided to work around the key areas and keep the seam away from the doorway/ shower/ sink/ soap dispenser . A little more thinking, a little more cutting, and quite a lot more sweating!

Could I have finished quicker? Probably.

But when a floor is expected to perform for the next 10–15 years, I’d rather spend an extra day getting some key details right

The vinyl installed is Altro Pisces, a specialist 2mm safety vinyl designed for wet environments, including showers and accessible bathrooms. With R11 slip resistance, Class B barefoot performance and excellent grip in wet conditions, it’s a great choice for areas used with both bare feet and footwear and best for me on the day, was great to work with and to weld.

Stuck down using AltroFix 19 Plus, a two-part polyurethane adhesive suitable for demanding wet areas.

Big open spaces, long runs of vinyl and plenty of ground to cover! 💪

A little look behind the scenes of a commercial vinyl flooring installation, from spreading the adhesive and laying the sheets to rolling, grooving and hot welding the joints with the Leister Minidrive.

Every stage matters, especially on a floor this size. Good preparation, careful installation and attention to detail all come together in the finished result.

And there’s something particularly satisfying about stepping back at the end and seeing the whole room completed! 👌

Good flooring starts long before the vinyl goes down!

Not every wall is suitable for sticking vinyl straight onto, and sometimes the best solution is to create a better surface to work with.

On this job, we’re lining the blockwork with flooring grade plywood to give the safety vinyl a solid, smooth and reliable surface to bond to.

A bit more prep now, but a much better chance of getting a finish that lasts.

Sometimes the most important part of a flooring installation is the work you’ll never see once it’s finished. 👌

Some vinyl welds test your technique… others test whether you actually fit in the space. 😂

A bit of hot welding on this Gerflor vinyl floor, tucked right underneath the worktop. Tight corners, awkward positions, but the weld still has to be right. 👌

Procedure complete. Floor layer successfully extracted. 😂

How to form an internal corner in Altro safety flooring like a Pro.

Internal mitre on Altro safety flooring, worked from start to finish. A bit of heat, a sharp knife, plenty of patience and a weld to finish it all off.

Nothing particularly flashy — just one of those little details of the trade I enjoy and love it when it all comes together nice and neat.

There’s a first time for everything and just have to deal with whatever is in front of you.
Pray. Less for easy. More for skill and strength. 🙏

Interesting Amtico pattern never seen or done before -45 layout - Funny shapes, walls, an open step, Ali Bendybull nosing— and no ready-made method waiting for me.

That’s one of the things I still love about flooring. Necessity pushing me to just find a way 💪💪

And when you finally make it look simple… that’s the satisfying bit. 👌 20 hours later - 40m2 completed 😱
