Genting Casino Pigeon Netting Complete
PestFix sister company British Bird Control technicians John and Barney Scanlon have just completed this challenging roof netting job at the Genting Casino in Southend.
Pigeons love to roost and nest under plant at rooftop level, as it provides them with the direct head cover they need, and when they do they create very bad fouling issues.
This job was not without its challenges, quoted initially off plans at the tender stage and as it very often the case, requiring a significant re-assessment on survey when the new (larger than planned) roof and plant was on.
With one side open to the sea and high plant housings making a roof mount solution impractical, it required our surveyors and team to think outside the box to use existing railings and barriers in conjunction with unistruts to lift the net up high enough to allow room to work underneath, while still having enough strength to withstand the elements faced on a coastal installation.
The works required some 400 metres of 2mm seven strand stainless steel wire to hold the netting, kept tight and in place through the use of 40x m6 barrel strainers in stainless steel, with copper ferrules in use for termination of the wires.
To complete the bespoke holding structure for the netting we also needed some 1500 angle (‘L) brackets plus 40x 0-20mm corner fixing roof mounts. All from PestFix of course.
Finally the team was able to meticulously secure the50mm black pigeon nets to the wires, segment by segment, through the use of over 20,000 SR8 grade 304 c-ring hog ring staples. To protect the area we needed 10x 10mx10m black pigeon nets and 4x 5mx10m nets.
This still left some lower areas unprotected, which we solved through the use of installing panels of 12-gauge hot dipped galvanised steel weldmesh in 50mm (2in) mesh size, the same as pigeon netting. This is the same mesh we use for most of our solar panel pigeon proofing (https://britishbirdcontrol.co.uk/service/solar-panel-pigeon-proofing/ ) works.
