Waking up this morning to some borrowed beauty just in from the garden ☕️🌸 a late afternoon harvest to save these anemones and roses from the day’s heavy rain. I often talk about designing for hot, dry summers and extreme weather but this doesn’t have to mean giving up on our love for cottage gardens.

There is nothing like softer, traditional romantic blooms. Integrating a cottage look into a modern, resilient planting scheme is one of my favorite design challenges. It gives you that loose, joyful abundance with added resilience that makes a garden beautiful all year around. 🌱 🌱☘️🍀🌷🌴

When you invest so much heart into building or renovating your dream home, the hardscaping and patio are naturally the first priority. But once the builders complete their work, you’re left with the most exciting phase of all: breathing life into the soil.
A garden isn't a static fixture—it’s a living, evolving ecosystem. And getting plants to establish, thrive, and cope with changing UK seasons takes a long-term vision.
When I stepped onto this site after the building work finished, the space was a complete clean slate waiting for a purpose.
Instead of just filling beds with temporary colour, we created a long-term masterplan tailored to the site. Over two years of seasonal direction visits, I stayed by the client's side:

Sketching on a Sunday. I am planning a vegetable and fruit garden. Despite all of the graphic design programs out there, I still prefer sketching by hand. It feels more intuitive to me as I study and understand the space and the flow of it. This kind of sketch is that behind the scenes type of sketch - for my eyes only sort of thing - but it is absolutely vital to my process, I make hundreds of them all the time 😅

Enjoying the shade in the garden with one of my garden buddies. Robin love finding worms in the freshly dug soil. And although I am not planting, I have let foxes dig in my garden. Our drip hose watering system is keeping patches of the soil moist in this drought and little robin here is enjoying a bit of coolness. I love sharing my garden with wildlife ☀️

Tired of looking out at a garden that's struggling?

A climate-resilient garden isn't about replacing everything with Mediterranean plants. It's about thoughtful design: understanding your garden, improving the soil, choosing the right plants for the right place, and creating a space that can cope with hotter, drier summers while still looking beautiful.
That's exactly how I approach every garden I design. My aim is to create spaces that are beautiful, practical and resilient, so you can spend less time worrying about your garden and more time enjoying it.
Gardens that thrive don't happen by chance. They start with thoughtful planning, long before the first plant goes into the ground.
