Staircases create opportunities for architectural expression. They connect levels, shape circulation and introduce spatial interest through proportion, movement, lighting and materials.

A successful staircase brings together spatial design, material quality and high quality construction detailing. The quality of these decisions contributes to the character, performance and longevity of the building.

Thoughtful design considers how a home performs every day: how spaces support family interaction, how natural light changes throughout the seasons, how views are framed and how rooms adapt as lifestyles evolve.

These qualities are rarely created through complexity. They come from clarity of purpose and a deep understanding of how people want to live.

In an industry that often celebrates what can be added, perhaps we should spend more time considering what can be improved.

As architects, we have a responsibility to stay up to date with evolving regulations, guidance and best practice, particularly in areas that have a direct impact on building safety. Recently, Luke Morgan of ROCKWOOL Group, delivered an insightful CPD presentation focusing on flat roof construction and fire protection.

The session covered:
- Building Regulations requirements and the role of guidance documents such as Approved Document B
- Practical considerations and real-world installations for flat roofs
- The role of non-combustible materials, including insulation, in delivering safer flat roof systems

The presentation generated plenty of discussion, with Luke answering a wide range of technical questions and sharing valuable industry insight. We asked about different finishes and qualities of the product range and the did not limit ourselves to flat roofs.

In the wake of the Grenfell tragedy, the construction industry continues to strengthen its focus on competence, building safety and lifelong learning. Regular technical CPD helps ensure we are playing our part in delivering safer homes and buildings, reflecting the principles promoted through the RIBA's recommendations.

A big thank you to Rockwool and Luke Morgan for an engaging and thought-provoking session.

(We would recommend this CPD to other architects)

One of England's warmest Julys on record raises an important question: Are our buildings ready for hotter summers?

Our August Linkedin newsletter explores how measures that keep buildings warm in winter can also help keep them cool in summer, improving comfort, resilience and energy performance all year round.

Feasibility is not merely a procedural milestone on the route to design. A feasibility study is where the environmental performance, commercial viability and long-term adaptability are analysed and options are costed and evaluated. Missing this crucial stage can lead to poor decisions and cost more in the long run.

Can existing or historic buildings be sustainable without compromising their character? Absolutely.

The most successful heritage retrofits don't start with technology—they start with understanding the building.

By carefully integrating modern building services with conservation-led design, we're helping historic and listed buildings achieve meaningful reductions in energy use while preserving what makes them special.

Our toolkit includes:
✓ Low-temperature underfloor heating
✓ Ground source heat pumps
✓ MVHR ventilation systems
✓ Ultra-thin vacuum glazing
✓ Breathable internal wall insulation

The result? Better comfort, lower carbon emissions, improved efficiency, and a healthier building fabric—all while respecting the building's heritage.

Good conservation and good sustainability should go hand in hand.

Bigger homes don't always deliver better living.

It's a belief that continues to drive many residential projects, yet the homes that feel the most successful are often those where space is used more intelligently, not simply expanded.

The real value of residential architecture lies in creating stronger connections—between people, light, landscape and daily life.

Good architecture doesn't start with space. It starts with life, and shapes the space around it.
