Pigeon droppings contain high concentrations of uric acid. Left untreated, it actively eats through protective paintwork, powder coatings, galvanized steel, and stonework. It degrades hydraulic seals on rooftop plant machinery and corrodes air conditioning casings, turning a simple cleaning requirement into an expensive structural repair.

2️⃣ Airborne health risks and biohazards
Guano harbours harmful pathogens including ornithosis, listeria, and e-coli. When droppings dry out, routine foot traffic or air intake systems disturb the material, sending microscopic dust into the air. Inhaling these airborne spores can even cause respiratory illnesses like psittacosis and cryptococcosis. In addition, dry guano on external walkways creates a severe slip hazard, while active nesting sites frequently attract secondary infestations of bird mites, fleas, and carpet beetles.

3️⃣ Environmental and legal compliance
Attempting to wash guano down standard surface drains or scraping it into general waste bins breaches waste management regulations. Bird waste is classified as hazardous biological waste, requiring disposal through a fully licensed Environment Agency waste carrier. Furthermore, because all UK wild birds, their active nests, and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, any clearance work must be carefully timed and managed to remain fully compliant with the law.

As you clear up the garden for autumn, be careful how you store firewood and manage green waste as both can be an attractive shelter for mice and rats.

A few simple adjustments right now will make your property far less appealing to rats and mice as temperatures drop.

Stack any firewood at least 30 centimetres off the ground and well away from your main house walls. Leaving log piles pressed against brickwork creates a warm, dry shelter for rats right next to your home.

Trim back thick climbing ivy growing up your external walls. Dense ivy acts as a natural ladder, giving mice and rats easy access to open windows, air vents, and soffits.

Make sure your outdoor compost bins have solid bases or stainless steel mesh fitted underneath. This simple step stops rats from burrowing into the base of compost heaps searching for food and warmth.

Taking these quick preventive measures now will save you from dealing with an indoor rodent problem later this winter.

A young mouse can squeeze through an opening just 6mm wide. That is roughly the width of a standard biro pen.

As the weather starts to cool, mice (and rats) will seek warmth, shelter and access to food and water. Small gaps around your property act as open doors.

Check your air bricks, as unprotected air vents are one of the most common entry points into floor voids.

Do you have any small gaps where outdoor taps, boiler pipes, or waste lines pass through brickwork? They are also common access points.

When it comes to front, back, or garage doors, any worn rubber seals or gaps under timber can also be used by rodents.
