Design Principles

The question is, which one do you think makes the best investment?

Personally, I’d never buy a new-build property.

New builds are often overpriced, and in many cases, they’re built to a lower standard than older properties.

Instead, I increasingly like buying ex-council homes that were originally purchased through the Right to Buy scheme.

Why?

Many of these properties have been poorly maintained or left run-down, creating a great opportunity to refurbish them and increase their value.

You can also potentially rent ex-council properties back to the council through a social housing provider on a 3- to 5-year lease.

Depending on the agreement, this can mean guaranteed rent with much of the day-to-day management taken care of.

If you want to learn how strategies like this work, I’m running a FREE online property training where I break down some of the best ways to get into property in 2026.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is introducing a new scheme to help young people get onto the property ladder. This “Your First Home” scheme is open to first-time buyers in England with a 2.5% deposit. It would offer a loan of 20% of their new build property’s value to help cover the purchase.

James Barton, Head of London & South East Land at Knight Frank:
“Help to Buy support is without a doubt the single biggest catalyst the market needs to get building. Knight Frank has long been calling for the Government to use demand-side stimulus alongside supply-side support and today we seem to be one step closer. If the Government follows through, this will be a gamechanger for housebuilders and developers. Having spoken to many of my clients today following the news, all of them are hoping this will result in action and is not just empty words ahead of the Labour party conference this week.”

What do you think?
