What makes a city tick - and how can we make it work for everyone?

For the second edition of Discussions, Downstairs at dMFK, we invited Peter Murray OBE for a talk and Q&A, getting his perspective as he develops his campaign for Mayor of London in 2028.

Covering everything from housing to transport and infrastructure, Peter’s deep understanding of the built environment and its intrinsic relationship with the capital made for an insightful conversation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our event, bringing meaningful contributions to the room, and especially to Peter for his fascinating talk.

Shaping the future of one of London’s most iconic destinations takes expertise and care.

Director Jonny Wong has been appointed to the Oxford Street Development Corporation’s (OSDC) new Planning Quality Review Panel, bringing his experience from delivering schemes with complex planning and design challenges to a nationally significant project.

Long recognised as the UK’s high street, Oxford Street is an iconic symbol of London, and a renowned retail destination. The recently established Corporation’s mission is to renew the destination in the face of growing external challenges, supporting existing and new retail, enhanced public realm, and securing the area’s future for years to come.

With the Corporation championing high-quality, sustainable design across Oxford Street, the Planning Quality Review Panel’s 23 experts will play a central role in supporting future planning, design, and delivery. Jonny will join meetings over the coming months to support in key decision making over major upcoming projects in the area.

The OSDC PQRP is coordinated by Frame Projects.

dMFK has a deep connection to Manchester - it’s where the dM, F and K all first met, and many alumni have since gone on to join the studio.

It’s one reason why we supported the recent ‘Meet the Practice’ day at the Manchester School of Architecture, with alumni Jonny Wong and Madeleine Arnell returning to speak to students and discuss potential future careers.

We also know it’s essential to keep close connections to the next generation of architects, supporting their move into practice through knowledge sharing and genuine opportunities. Events like these are an essential part of keeping emerging talent in the sector and bringing the best ideas into practice - long may it continue.

We work our buildings hard - because quality is all in the details.

Julian de Metz spoke to RIBAJ about how we considered the fine details in four recent schemes, using materiality, space and light to create beautiful and effective workspaces.

Read the latest issue (2026/04) to discover how we used light at Chancery House, heritage detailing at 170 Piccadilly, zoning at a HQ in Mayfair, and materiality at our own studio in Charlotte Street.

The dMFK studio is an office, but also an essential part of the way we work - a tool that supports our creative design.

Directors Julian de Metz and Jonny Wong sat down with Pamela Buxton to talk about how we poured our design ethos into our studio, creating a space which reflects and elevates our style.

We picked Charlotte Street for its vibrant street-scape and shop-front feel, providing a literal and figurative window into the practice. When we had the opportunity to expand our space into the basement, accommodating our growing practice, it was also a chance to create a dedicated space that showcased our design process, housing a living sample library and rotating furniture and product showcase.

It has changed and improve the way we work with each other, from offering spaces for collaborative meetings to creating a new experiential way to specify materials and products with clients. The space now demonstrates our culture and values, and feels like a real home for the practice.

Jonny Wong sat with Rachel Birchmore and Louise Rodgers for the latest episode of Coaches on the Couch, exploring leadership and development in the built environment.

A wide ranging discussion touching on self awareness, growth, and metacognition, one of the key takeaways from Jonny’s perspective is that effective communication is essential for strong leadership.

Being able to read the room, facilitate discussions where everyone feels able to contribute, and be honest about when you don’t know the answers are some of the critical skills which support the growth of your team while running an effective business.

His Majesty King Charles III visited the newly restored Voysey House in Chiswick, headquarters of Sanderson Design Group, to mark the wallpaper brand’s centenary as a Royal Warrant holder, an honour first granted in 1924 and renewed by His Majesty last December.

Director Joshua Scott had the opportunity to meet His Majesty and discuss the work that went into the acclaimed restoration of the historic building.

Designed in 1902 by celebrated architect C. F. A. Voysey for Arthur Sanderson & Sons, the Grade II* listed building is one of the Arts & Crafts movement’s most distinctive commercial works. Its heritage led our restoration of the iconic building in 2024: outside, striking white glazed brick and Portland stone façades were carefully repaired and fitted with ultra-thin double glazing that halves U-values without altering the building’s appearance. Inside, Staffordshire blue quarry tiles, finely crafted joinery and a richly researched bottle-green colour palette – Voysey’s original tone, uncovered through detailed paintwork analysis – reconnect the building to its Arts & Crafts roots.

It was a privilege to play a part in this building’s story. Congratulations to Sanderson Design Group, CEO Lisa Montague, and the team at Dorrington on a truly special occasion.
