CHURCH ROAD | BARNES

The detailing at Church Road continues into the private rooms of the house.

In the principal bedroom, panelling and cornicing retain the proportions and character of the original building.

The bathroom brings together a marble vanity, a freestanding stone bath and a reeded glass door to the shower. Concealed lighting at floor level adds a softer layer beneath the restored cornice.

Bringing those features together calls for careful coordination, particularly where the stone, glass, plasterwork and lighting meet.

CHURCH ROAD | BARNES

At the rear of Church Road, the extension gives the house a new relationship with its garden.

A pale precast concrete surround frames the sliding doors, with tapered reveals giving depth to the opening. The panels have been pigmented to complement the existing materials.

Alongside it, the glazed link leaves the original brickwork visible and brings light into the point where the two structures meet.

The finished elevation looks simple, but its character comes from the proportions, the material choices and the precision of those junctions.

CHURCH ROAD | BARNES

The view through these doors brings several of Church Road’s details together.

Dark frames sit against pale wall panelling and decorative cornicing, with the staircase visible beyond. The glazing keeps that connection between the rooms, even when the doors are closed.

The staircase has a continuous timber handrail and metal spindles, with sweeping winders carrying the turn between floors.

It’s where these different elements meet that the quality of the construction comes through.

PRECISION IS OFTEN QUIET

It’s often the finer details of a building that require the most care.

Here, our team is working on the exterior architectural detailing, where the decorative mouldings, brickwork and window surrounds all need to come together neatly.

There’s a lot of careful work involved in achieving these finishes, particularly when dealing with different materials and the intricate profiles of traditional architecture.

It’s about taking the time to get the proportions, alignment and finishing right, so that each element sits naturally alongside the next.

These are the details that can easily be overlooked once the scaffolding comes down, but they make a real difference to the finished building.

WORKING WITH EXISTING ARCHITECTURE

Working within an existing building is rarely about imposing something new.

It begins with understanding what is already there.

Proportions, original detailing, structure and materials all establish a character that new construction needs to respect.

Sometimes that means reinstating details that have been lost. In other areas, it means introducing contemporary elements that sit comfortably alongside the original features.

Much of the work comes down to how the old and new meet.

Getting those details right takes careful planning and coordination, particularly where different materials, finishes and structural elements come together.

When it’s done well, the new work feels like it has always belonged there.

WHAT SITS BEHIND THE FINISH

A finished interior rarely shows the amount of coordination that sits behind it.

By the time the final joinery, stonework and decorative finishes are installed, much of the work that determines the quality of the space has already been completed.

Services have been coordinated around architectural details. Junctions have been resolved. Levels established. Lighting positions considered alongside ceilings, joinery and furniture layouts.

Each decision affects the next.

It is this stage of a build that often determines whether the finished space feels considered or simply finished.

For us, the construction is not separate from the design. It is what allows the design to be realised as intended.

The kitchen at Church Road is all about the balance between materials.

Dark-stained timber runs from floor to ceiling, giving the cabinetry a strong presence in the room, while the lighter stone brings contrast across the worktops and recessed section behind the sink. Integrated lighting has been worked into the design, drawing attention to the natural movement in the stone without becoming a feature in itself.

At the centre, the island brings everything together. A substantial stone slab sits above a bronze-effect base, with timber detailing below adding warmth and another layer to the design.

The finished kitchen feels clean and uncomplicated, but achieving that simplicity takes a lot of coordination. The cabinetry, stone, lighting, appliances and services all have to meet precisely.

It’s that attention to what sits behind the finish that allows the finished space to feel so effortless.
