๐จ CCTV Fault Finding Call-Out โ Restaurant Business ๐จ
This morning, I attended a local restaurant after the owner reported that they could no longer view their CCTV system remotely on their mobile phone app.
Upon arrival, I carried out a full CCTV diagnostic and fault-finding inspection. One of the first things I noticed was that the cabling and general cable management around the router and CCTV equipment wasn't ideal.
Whilst poor cable management doesn't always cause faults, it can certainly make diagnosing issues more difficult and increase the likelihood of future problems.
After testing the system, I quickly identified the fault.
The RJ45 network connector had become damaged and the cable had twisted, causing the internal conductors to pull away from the connection point.
This meant the CCTV recorder was no longer communicating correctly with the network.
To rectify the issue, I removed the damaged connector, cut back the cable, fitted a new RJ45 connection and then tested the cable using a network tester to ensure all pairs were operating correctly.
Once satisfied with the cable test results, I reconfigured the CCTV recorder, checked the network settings and restored the remote viewing service.
A short while later, the customer's CCTV system was back online and fully accessible from their mobile phone.
Fortunately, in this instance, the fault was localised to the connector itself.
Had the cable been damaged further along the route, additional works may have been required to replace part or all of the cable run.
Thankfully, a thorough diagnostic process allowed me to identify and rectify the fault quickly, saving the customer both time and expense.
During my visit, I also provided recommendations on:
โ
Improving cable management
โ
DVR housekeeping and ventilation
โ
Network reliability
โ
Routine servicing and maintenance
โ
Maximising CCTV performance and lifespan
Many business owners don't realise that a small fault such as a damaged network connector can completely prevent remote viewing and potentially affect the operation of the CCTV system itself.
This is exactly why regular servicing and maintenance are so important.
For businesses selling age-restricted products such as alcohol, to***co products and vapes, CCTV systems often play an important role in security, incident investigation and licence compliance.
Whilst licensing requirements vary between local authorities, businesses should always ensure that any CCTV system they rely upon is functioning correctly, recording properly and capable of providing footage when required.
Trading Standards and Licensing Officers may review:
โข CCTV footage where available
โข Challenge 25 procedures
โข Refusal logs
โข Staff training records
โข Incident records
โข Compliance with licence conditions
When incidents occur, a working CCTV system can be invaluable in protecting both the business and its staff.
Remember, installing CCTV is only part of the job.
The real value comes from regular servicing, maintenance and ensuring the system is working correctly when you need it most.
