Thinking about extending your London home? A successful extension isn’t simply about adding as many square metres as possible. The real opportunity is to improve how the whole house works - better flow, more natural light, a stronger connection to the garden and spaces that actually suit everyday family life.

At Home Tales, we design bespoke home extensions across London, from ground-floor extensions and loft conversions to internal reconfiguration. If you’re at the early stages, our Home Extensions London page is a useful place to start:

Planning a ground floor extension and a loft conversion? It’s worth designing them together, even if you don’t intend to build them at the same time. Thinking about the finished home as a whole can help avoid making decisions during phase one that make phase two unnecessarily difficult later. Designing both together doesn’t mean you have to build both together, you can still phase the work around budget and family life.

We’ve explained the benefits, and the things to consider, in our latest guide:

Bi-fold, sliding, Crittall-style or French doors? Your external doors affect far more than the view. They shape the light, layout, garden connection and everyday use of your extension.

Our guide compares the main options and what to consider before choosing: https://www.hometales.co.uk/external-doors-what-are-my-options/

Planning an extension in South West London?

A Victorian terrace in Wandsworth can face different planning considerations from a very similar house in Wimbledon or Lambeth. Borough policies, conservation areas, neighbouring properties and local precedents can all influence what is likely to be supported.

Our new guide explains the common extension types, local planning considerations, likely costs and practical design decisions homeowners should consider before committing to a scheme.

A bigger extension does not automatically create a better ground floor. In many London terraces, the real challenge is what happens to the middle room once the kitchen moves towards the garden. Good design looks at the entire floor plan. Where will natural light reach? How will people move through the house? Where will storage sit? Does the original middle room still have a clear purpose?

That is often where the difference between simply adding space and genuinely improving a home is found.
