Here, we are building the blockwork core of a bespoke raised planter in a London garden—carefully checking the levels, protecting the junctions and preparing reclaimed bricks for the visible finish.

Perhaps not the most glamorous part of the project, but certainly the one that will determine how well the finished planter performs, settles into the garden and ages over time.

The photographs show the stage that finished garden photography usually leaves out: excavation, new foundations, careful setting-out and the gradual construction of the masonry that will shape the space.

For this London garden project, reclaimed stock bricks are being used to form low retaining walls and raised planting areas. A sweeping curve follows the established tree, while solid brick returns and piers give definition to the new layout.

The mixed brick tones help the new work settle naturally into a mature urban garden. It is still a working site, but the proportions and movement of the finished space are already beginning to emerge.
