Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber Servicing & Repairs – Another Fault Successfully Resolved

Yesterday, SmithTech Ltd attended a hyperbaric oxygen chamber following reports of an unusual whistling noise during operation.

Although the chamber was still functioning, the noise was noticeable and required investigation.

During our inspection and fault-finding process, we traced the problem to a cable gland at the point where the electrical cable enters the pressurised chamber to connect with the internal electronic components.

Over several years of operation, the cable gland had gradually become loose, allowing a small amount of compressed air to escape. Although the pressure loss was minor and had not caused any reported operational problems, the escaping air was producing an unacceptable whistling noise.

Once we identified the source, we secured the cable gland and checked the affected area again. The whistling noise disappeared, and the air leak was successfully resolved.

This is a good example of how even a relatively small component can affect the performance of specialist pressurised equipment.

Hybrid Sauna Installation & Commissioning

Another beautiful hybrid sauna installation completed and commissioned by Smithtech Ltd.

This sauna combines traditional Finnish sauna heating with infrared technology, giving the customer the flexibility to enjoy two different sauna experiences in one beautifully designed space.

The traditional sauna is powered by a HUUM CLIFF 6 kW heater, connected to a 230 V single-phase supply. The heater was wired correctly for single-phase operation in accordance with HUUM’s requirements. This is particularly important, as we regularly come across sauna installations where heaters have been incorrectly connected for single-phase operation.

The infrared system features five Harvia infrared panels, providing a gentler infrared heating option alongside the traditional sauna heater.

We completed the electrical installation, HUUM heater and Harvia infrared panel connections, controls, sensors, configuration, commissioning and full functional testing.

⚠️ A sauna can work perfectly after installation and still be wired incorrectly.

Smithtech Ltd recently attended a sauna in London after a 9 kW heater stopped working. The sauna had been operating for approximately two years since installation, so to the customer everything appeared to have been working correctly.

Our inspection found a different story.

The heater had been incorrectly connected for the available single-phase supply and was not wired in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended arrangement. The full 9 kW heater load had effectively been passed through a single contactor within the control system.

It worked — but not for very long.

Eventually, the contactor failed, and we found visible evidence of overheating around its location inside the control box. The control system now requires replacement and the heater installation needs to be rewired correctly using the manufacturer-specified heat-resistant cable.

This is something we see far too often.

Connecting sauna heaters that have three separate heater outputs to a single-phase electrical supply can be confusing for installers who do not regularly work with sauna equipment. An incorrect connection does not necessarily cause an immediate failure. The sauna can heat up and appear to operate normally, sometimes for months or even years, while components are being subjected to loads they were not designed to carry.

Unfortunately, when the failure eventually happens, the customer pays the price.

In this case, work that should have been completed correctly during the original installation now has to be done for a second time, with the additional expense of replacing damaged control equipment.

Sauna installations involve more than simply providing power to a heater. Correct heater configuration, control equipment, temperature sensors, heat-resistant cabling and manufacturer-specific wiring requirements all need to be understood and followed.

Choosing the cheapest installation can become considerably more expensive in the long term.

Use an experienced sauna installer and get it done correctly the first time.

Another Tylö sauna inspection and electrical testing visit completed.

This sauna is fitted with a Tylö Sense-series 6.6 kW heater, operating from a 230 V single-phase supply, with a Tylö digital control panel and separate wall-mounted temperature sensor.

We carried out a professional inspection of the sauna electrical installation, testing of the heater and power supply, checks of the control system and sensor, together with operational testing of the complete system.

Sauna heaters operate under demanding conditions, combining high temperatures with significant electrical loads. Over time, electrical connections, heating elements, sensors and control equipment can develop faults or deteriorate.

Regular sauna inspection, testing and servicing can help identify problems early and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns, nuisance tripping or damage to expensive equipment.

A closer look at this recently completed Auroom Mira hybrid sauna.

We carried out the final set-up, electrical connections, testing and commissioning, leaving the sauna fully operational and ready to enjoy.

This hybrid system combines a HUUM HIVE Mini 9 kW traditional sauna heater with HUUM UKU controls and three infrared panels, giving the option of both traditional and infrared sauna heating in one beautifully designed cabin.

Another beautiful Auroom Mira sauna set up and commissioned by Smithtech Ltd.

For this installation, we completed the final set-up, connected the sauna to the property's electrical supply and carried out the electrical connections, testing and commissioning.

Another HUUM sauna control system installed and set up by Smithtech Ltd. 🔧

There’s a lot more behind a modern sauna than the heater you see inside the cabin. The control system is the heart of the installation, managing the heater and ensuring everything operates correctly and reliably.

For this project, the HUUM control equipment was installed within a dedicated enclosure, with organised cable management and clearly arranged connections. Keeping the installation tidy and accessible also makes future servicing, testing and fault finding much easier.

Once everything was installed, connected and checked, we added our Smithtech service label so our details are always available should the customer need future support.

We work with HUUM and many other leading sauna manufacturers, providing installation, commissioning, electrical work, servicing, repairs and fault finding for domestic and commercial sauna systems.

Another successful sauna heater repair completed!

This Tylö 6.6kW sauna heater had stopped working after the manual thermal cut-out had operated. After carrying out fault finding, the safety device was reset and a full electrical inspection was completed to ensure the heater was operating correctly.

Our testing included: ✔️ Insulation resistance testing ✔️ Heating element resistance measurements ✔️ Current draw testing ✔️ Internal visual inspection of electrical components

All three heating elements tested correctly, with balanced current draw, and the heater was returned to normal operation.

As part of the visit, we also assessed the condition of the heater and provided advice on future replacement options should the fault reoccur. We also recommended upgrading the heater connection to a heat-resistant cable if a new heater is installed, in line with the manufacturer's installation recommendations.
