Floral detailing like this is a hallmark of Hampstead’s Arts and Crafts streetscape. This floral banding at 10 Lyndhurst Road is a small but telling example of ornament used to humanise brickwork and give the facade rhythm and softness.

Do certain architectural forms make us feel more at ease?
Research suggests that people often perceive higher ceilings and softer, curvilinear forms as more welcoming and inviting than spaces dominated by sharp, angular lines. Higher ceilings have been linked to feelings of openness and freedom, while curves may evoke comfort and approachability.

But wellbeing in design is rarely about absolutes. Different spaces support different psychological needs. Sometimes we seek openness and inspiration; at other times, intimacy, structure and refuge.

Perhaps the question isn't whether curves are better than corners, but how we use each thoughtfully to create environments that help people flourish.

A great morning on Wednesday, participating in this panel discussion on well-being in residential design. Thank you Abby Fox and LC-AV LTD for organising, and Jeff Haysward for moderating so beautifully! The conversation focused largely on the importance of lighting, both natural and artificial, and was a great reminder that, as architects, we are not expected to know everything 🤓 There are excellent consultants we can reach out to with the expertise.
