Green Lodge, drawn.

A house shaped as much by section as by plan. The building is partially embedded into the site, placing the bedrooms below ground and allowing the main living spaces to sit above, beneath a simple asymmetric roof form.

Two concrete spine walls organise the house, while lightwells, rooflights and carefully positioned openings bring daylight deep into the lower level.

The exploded axonometric reveals the relationship between structure, landscape and enclosure, and how a relatively simple external form contains a much more complex sequence of spaces within.

Green Lodge, a contemporary new-build home in South West London.

Designed by Stylus Architects, the house uses untreated larch cladding, large framed openings and planted courtyards to create a strong connection between the architecture, garden and surrounding mature trees.

Rather than treating the landscape as something beyond the building, the house is designed around it. Deep openings frame views through the home, planting is drawn into the plan and the existing tree canopy becomes part of the architecture.

The natural timber exterior will continue to weather and soften over time, allowing the building to settle further into its garden setting.

Etta House featured in Wallpaper*

“Stylus Architects shapes a triumph of an angular house extension in south London.”

The existing house gave us an unusual starting point: no wall met another at 90 degrees.

Rather than correcting the geometry, we embraced it.
The angles became the organising principle for the extension, shaping the plan, rooflights, glazing and the two brick blades that define the garden elevation.

The result is a design where every element follows the same architectural logic.

We’re delighted to announce that not one, but two Stylus Architects projects have been shortlisted in the British Homes Awards 2026.

Green Lodge and Etta House have both been recognised in the Best Interior Design: Individual Home (Up to 2,500 sq ft) category. This category celebrates interiors that respond uniquely to the challenges of a home through space planning, materials, finishes and the experience of living within them.

For us, this recognition is particularly meaningful because we have always believed that architecture and interior design should never be separated. The best interiors are not applied at the end of a project. They emerge from the architecture itself. Light, structure, proportion, materiality and carefully crafted joinery all work together to create spaces that feel intuitive, calm and enduring.

Although Green Lodge and Etta House are very different homes, they share the same ambition: to create places where every decision, from the overall spatial strategy to the smallest detail, contributes to the experience of living there.

Congratulations to all of the shortlisted practices. We look forward to celebrating with everyone at the awards.

Rather than dominating its setting, the house is carefully embedded within it, using light, structure and material to create calm, generous spaces that feel intrinsically connected to their surroundings.

To see the project recognised alongside so many outstanding homes is a real honour.

We’re delighted to announce that Etta House has been shortlisted for the Architects' Journal Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2026.

Etta House began with a simple question: how can a modest Victorian home be transformed without losing the qualities that make it special?

Rather than treating the extension as an addition, the project reworks the existing house as a whole. The geometry of the site informed every decision, with angled brick forms shaping light, movement and views throughout the home. Bespoke brick detailing, carefully framed openings and a restrained material palette combine to create spaces that feel calm, generous and connected.

We’re incredibly proud to see the project recognised alongside so many inspiring examples of retrofit and reuse.

Congratulations to everyone shortlisted, and thank you to our fantastic clients, collaborators and project team who helped bring Etta House to life.

GREEN LODGE

Every space deserves the same level of attention.
Hallways are often treated as places to pass through. At Green Lodge, the entrance was designed with the same care as the main living spaces. Continuous oak panelling wraps walls, doors and ceiling, allowing architecture, joinery and structure to read as one.
Rather than relying on decoration, the space is defined by proportion, rhythm and natural materials, creating a quiet arrival that sets the tone for the home beyond.

We’re proud to see Green Lodge featured by Leibal.

For us, architecture is rarely about adding more. It is about understanding what a site is asking for.

Green Lodge sits within a sensitive landscape surrounded by mature trees and historic buildings. Rather than competing with its context, the house is drawn into it. Much of the accommodation sits below ground, where carefully positioned lightwells and rooflights transform what could have been dark spaces into bright, generous family rooms.

The project is a reminder that good architecture isn’t measured by how much you build, but by how intelligently every decision responds to its place.
