Office Closure – Friday 4th September 2026

As a mark of respect following the sad news of the passing of our founder and Chairman, Hylton Irving, our office and sites will be closed on Friday 4th September.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank our clients, suppliers and colleagues for their understanding during this difficult time.

Normal business will resume on Monday 7th September 2026.

On behalf of Hylton’s family, we would like to say a heartfelt thanks for hundreds of tributes and kind messages they have received since his death last week.

Hylton was a modest man, but he would have been quietly delighted by the esteem in which he was clearly held by his friends and colleagues – even if he would have needed his grandchildren to show him how to work Facebook.

Following a private cremation, a thanksgiving service in his honour will be held at Arthuret Church in Longtown on Friday, 4th September at 2pm. The family look forward to seeing you there.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to The Farmer Network www.thefarmernetwork.co.uk a not-for-profit organisation, close to Hylton’s heart, which offers advice and support to the farming community in north Cumbria.

It is with great sadness we must confirm that Hylton Irving, founder and chairman of R.H. Irving Construction Ltd, died peacefully this morning aged 90.

He was at home in Penton, surrounded by his family.

Despite a long illness, he remained typically bullish and good-humoured until the very end, and his forensic interest in what was going on with the business never waned.

Indeed only last week he could be found touring sites in South-West Scotland.

Hylton founded the company in 1974 and grew it from a one-man operation into one of the largest and most respected civil engineering businesses in the north of England.

However, he never failed to acknowledge the company’s success would not have been possible without the unrivalled skill and dedication of its workforce.

Details of funeral arrangements will follow. On behalf of the family we would like to thank everyone for their support over the last few months.

Another successful project delivered! 👏

🎥 We are delighted to showcase this video of a newly completed SPAR Retail Store and Petrol Filling Station in Longtown.

We're proud to have been main contractor for the project and successfully delivering this fantastic new development for our clients, James Hall & Co Ltd..

Located in Longtown town centre, the complex project involved the phased demolition of existing buildings and petrol filling station facilities, extensive groundworks and infrastructure improvements, and construction of a new approximately 670m² modern, high-quality retail building.

Works also included the formation of new fuel forecourt, customer parking, EV charging infrastructure, landscaping, new drainage and utility installations, together with associated highway improvements.

Constructed using a steel frame with natural stone and timber-clad elevations, the building also incorporates roof-mounted photovoltaic panels, providing a new high-quality, sustainable retail facility for the Longtown community.

Congratulations to our in-house management and delivery teams, client, consultants and supply chain partners for their professionalism and collaboration throughout the successful delivery of this scheme.
