This rendering is of a project that began as a very small traditional stone barn that had extant Class Q permission to convert to a 2 bedroom dwelling. The Applicant purchased the plot and commissioned Venning Architectural to design a replacement dwelling.
The proposal is significantly larger and more complex than the existing and incorporates a sunken courtyard (excavated from the field to the rear) with a bridged access/patio to the first floor living space. In order to suit the rural surroundings, choices with both the roof form and materials were made to help to retain the agricultural feel of the building that is to be replaced, this resulted in the specification of vertical timber cladding and natural stone for the walls and a profiled fibre cement roof. The eaves are very low given that the original dwelling was single storey and so a 'shed dormer' roof structure reaches across 5m of the rear elevation in order to allow for bi-fold doors to access the bridged patio area.
Venning Architectural has worked alongside JL Planning who submitted the planning application on the Applicants behalf, which has just been approved and the construction design will now begin. The walls of the dwelling are to be constructed with insulated concrete formwork and the Applicant intends to carry out much of the build-work himself.
