An alarming example of how leaving window lintels unsupported after installing UPVC windows could lead to serious structural failure- check out the video.

We've just posted another blog post about another window lintel repair we completed, yet again caused by UPVC windows not having enough strength to support brickwork on their own. Alarmingly, the brickwork on this one was beginning to fall away.

JTC Structural Repairs were able to rectify this one in one day using a masonry beaming lintel system in just 1 day- and the only visible signs of our works afterwards were the freshly repointed mortar over the top of our works that was still drying.

Is the brickwork above your windows cracking?
If your house was built post 1960 and pre 1990, the cracking is probably due to the replacement of your load bearing timber or metal window frames with NON load bearing U.P.V.C double glazed frames. If the above describes your house, read on for more:

When the house was built, the brickwork above the outer leaf of the window opening was supported by the window frame. When the window frames were replaced with UPVC, the structural support above the opening was removed- resulting in the cracking and failure of the window head.

The cracking starts as hairline cracks forming the rough shape of a triangle above the window opening. Eventually if left too long without support, the brickwork damages the window frame and in the worst cases eventually collapses.

JTC Structural Repairs specialise in the retro fitting of fully engineered stainess steel wire lintels hidden beneath the brickwork mortar.

Our warranties are independently backed by the Federation of Master Builders for a period of 20 years and are accepted by building societies and chartered surveyors as an engineered solution to the problem.

We have been been delighted to support the DIY SOS team for many years on their various projects all over the UK- our first structural repairs being carried out for them back in 2012.

Over the years we have also assisted the team on projects in Southampton, Dartford, Loughborough, Huntingdon, Manchester, Colchester, Doncaster, Stoke on Trent amongst loads of others.

On this occasion, we were delighted to answer the call for assistance on a project in our hometown of Leicester.

We carried out dampproofing and timber treatment with products to a 1960's traditional build that was undergoing a huge effort to rebuild and refurbish. It never ceases to amaze us how many local trades get stuck in on these DIY SOS builds with such small timeframes. Leicester was no exception this time, with over 200 trades and good hearted locals turning up to make a difference for Isla and her family. Looking forward to sharing more about the job when the episode comes out, we can't wait for you to see the difference it made to this family. In all of the projects we have done to date it is fair to say the contribution from the Leicestershire Construction trade was massive and heart warming, not forgetting the volunteers from local catering companies who provided food and drink for all involved.
