Before & During: A complete garden transformation in Loughton, Essex.

We’ve replaced the old, weathered concrete slabs with stunning large-format Rassa White porcelain paving to create a sleek, modern outdoor space.

By removing the tired old artificial lawn, the entire garden has been opened up to feel larger, cleaner, and more contemporary. Next week, we’ll complete the project by grouting the porcelain and installing our premium 40mmMulsanne artificial grass in the centre — delivering the perfect balance of luxury paving and low-maintenance greenery.

This garden has good bones, but it’s definitely ready for a fresh new chapter. The existing space feels tired and patchy now, with the old artificial grass worn out and the paving looking dated after only a few years. Once transformed, this is going to feel like a completely different outdoor space.

The upgrade to Rassa White porcelain paving will instantly brighten and modernise the garden, giving it a much cleaner, more premium finish while reflecting light beautifully around the space. Replacing the worn artificial lawn with 40mm Mulsanne artificial grass will also make a huge difference — creating a lush, realistic lawn that looks immaculate year-round with far better texture and depth.

There’s already a lovely structure to the garden with the mature planting, feature archway and surrounding greenery, so the new materials will really elevate everything around them instead of starting from scratch. It’s the perfect example of how quality landscaping can completely revive an older garden and turn it into a modern, low-maintenance outdoor living area.

All works are being carried out by C Howell Builders and Landscapers, and this project is set to completely transform the space from an ageing garden into a fresh, contemporary retreat.

Out with the old, in with the new!

We recently came across this patio that had unfortunately been installed using two completely different types of paving – honed sandstone and porcelain. As you can see, the joint lines don’t line up, the colours clash, and the overall finish just doesn’t work.

A patio should look clean, consistent and professionally set out. Mixing materials like this without proper planning can leave the space looking patchy and uneven.

Our solution:
We’ll be removing all of the existing paving and starting fresh, installing 900 × 600 Kandla Grey porcelain paving to create a modern, uniform finish that will transform the whole garden.

We recently completed this beautiful garden landscaping project in Epping, Essex, creating a clean, modern outdoor space that is both practical and visually striking.

For this installation, we used our premium Mulsanne artificial grass, carefully shaped to follow the natural curves of the garden and seamlessly blend with the surrounding planting beds. The result is a lush, perfectly manicured lawn that stays green all year round with minimal maintenance.

What 20 mm Slate Paving Is

1. Appearance
• Naturally riven (slightly textured) or smooth finishes.
• Rich, deep colours—commonly:
• Black/charcoal
• Dark grey
• Blue-grey
• Greenish tones
• Subtle variation between slabs gives a natural, premium look.

2. Texture
• Typically lightly riven for grip.
• Some suppliers offer calibrated 20 mm slate, meaning the underside is machine-cut for consistent thickness.

3. Durability
• Slate is dense and hard-wearing.
• Resistant to:
• Weathering
• Frost
• Algae (better than many sandstones)
• Low water absorption reduces staining and frost damage.

4. Size Options

Common slab formats:
• 600×600 mm

Installation Notes
• 20 mm slabs are usually installed on a full mortar bed.
• Joints are typically filled with an exterior grout or jointing compound.
• A solid sub-base (e.g., compacted MOT Type 1) is needed to prevent movement.
• Although 20 mm is strong, they are not normally recommended for driveway vehicle loads unless laid on a reinforced concrete base.
