Artisan Turning I turn pieces of wood other woodturners wouldn't touch. I have just started the highly dangerous art of Lichtenberg wood burning.

I only source wood for my bowls from windfall, diseased trees or from trees that have been cut down for safety reasons.

Something a little different this time — David’s adding Lichtenberg burning to this bamboo penguin.

The branching burn patterns work brilliantly against the lighter bamboo, giving the piece loads more character while still keeping the penguin shape as the main feature.

Definitely one of the more unusual pieces to get the Lichtenberg treatment!

Another piece getting the Lichtenberg treatment — this time a bamboo pic tray.

The electrical burn creates those branching patterns across the surface, giving a simple everyday item a completely different look. Every burn travels its own way, so the finished pattern is always unique.

Really satisfying watching this one take shape.

David’s been Lichtenberg burning these wooden coasters, creating completely unique patterns across every piece. No two burns ever come out the same, which is what makes this process so satisfying to watch.

I love how the natural figuring and shape have been kept in the finished piece, giving it loads of character and making it completely one of a kind. No two bowls are ever the same, and this one has its own real personality.

Definitely a piece that shows off just how special yew can be.

This yew crotch bowl has come out beautifully.

The natural shape, rich colour and incredible grain patterns make this one really stand out. Pieces like this are always a reminder that the wood does most of the talking — I just help bring it to life.

Every angle on this bowl shows off something different, and that’s what makes working with timber like this so rewarding.

Not every bowl needs to be perfectly round!

I wanted to keep as much of the original character of this piece as possible, leaving the natural shape around the top rather than turning it all away.

Combined with the spalting and contrasting colours in the timber, it’s ended up with a shape and finish completely unique to this piece.

Definitely not one you’ll find another copy of!

One of my favourite things about working with spalted timber is that no two pieces can ever be the same.

All of those dark lines and markings have been created naturally within the wood, and turning it into a bowl really brings them to life.

I always love working with wood like this — you never quite know what’s going to be revealed until you start turning it.
