🦇 Brown Long‑Eared Bats in UK Buildings
If you’ve ever spotted a quiet cluster of bats tucked in a loft or hanging from an old beam, there’s a good chance they were brown long‑eared bats — one of the UK’s most charming and gentle species.
With their huge ears and soft grey‑brown fur, these bats often choose roof spaces, churches, barns and older houses as summer roosts. They’re incredibly light on the landscape, causing no damage and rarely noticed at all.
Because all bats and their roosts are fully protected by law, any discovery should be treated with care. If you find them:
Keep disturbance to an absolute minimum
Avoid lights, noise and drafts
Seek advice from a licensed bat worker before any building works
These bats are quiet neighbours — and a sign of a healthy environment. Let’s keep their safe spaces safe.
