The PPE report is live! It’s on the WIBB website ....please read and share. And let us know what you think.

It’s been a bit of a labour of love....we tried to get funding but it’s hard to get people to fund this sort of thing. So we’ve done it ourselves and made do.....which is appropriate because that’s what you’re all doing with your PPE.....only that’s not safe. So please share this report far and wide. It’s not shouty or cross ...it’s based on data and is designed to be helpful to you, helpful for yards, and helpful to raise the profile of this daily challenge so women can just get on with the job, with parity in PPE.

And there is some great news.....the amazing has campaigned for a new British Standards for provision of inclusive PPE BS30417....the construction industry have the same challenges. So we have the data, we have technical guidelines, we just need to tell everyone about it.

Huge thanks to for brilliant article...link in bio.

And huge thanks to .and.silver for co-writing the survey and bringing her expertise.

And final thanks to you all for the amazing images, and for doing the survey and creating a community voice ....really hope someone listens.

Important Industry Update:-

Last week the Agency officially published the new Sport & Pleasure Vessel Code, and laid the accompanying Statutory Instrument in parliament. The Code will come into force on 12 December 2025 and marks a significant step forward in enhancing safety and compliance across the sector.

It replaces the Blue, Yellow and Red Codes, as well as MGN 280 and the IPV Code, consolidating them into a single document for the safe operation and certification of all small commercial vessels used for sport or pleasure.

This updated Code follows years of redevelopment after previous attempts to formalise MGN 280. It introduces enhanced safety standards, incorporates Marine Accident Investigations Branch (MAIB) recommendations and learnings, and establishes a framework for vessels operating with alternative fuels — including fully electric and hybrid propulsion systems.

You can read the full publication here: https://lnkd.in/ej2DFi2t

You can read their announcement with links to their Q&A sheet here: https://lnkd.in/d6HhtDME

As a stakeholder who was involved in the drafting process I well understand the implications. If you operate an existing vessel or intend to certificate a new vessel and require guidance on what impact the new Code will have on your operations, please get in touch for support.

I had an excellent day this week at the North Sea MASS Symposium, hosted by the Maritime at the .

The event featured a full and engaging agenda, with thought-provoking discussions on how each of the North Sea signatory nations of the MOU are advancing the enablement of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). It was particularly insightful to hear updates on the IMO’s MASS Code, the North Sea MoU, and the broader challenges and opportunities surrounding the adoption of autonomous maritime technologies. It is good to keep abreast of the MASS industry challenges and progress enabling me to keep our clients better informed.

A special thank you to for showcasing their impressive vessel — perfectly positioned in front of the iconic RRS Discovery. It was also nice to see the Lymington undergoing annual repairs and workboats busy in the river.

As ever it was a pleasure to reconnect with colleagues from across the sector and to meet a few new faces who share our commitment to maritime innovation.

🚢 Tonnage vs. Displacement — What’s the Difference? ⚖️

Understanding the core ship measurement terms is key in the maritime world. Here’s a quick breakdown:

🔴 1. Gross Tonnage (GT)
➤ Total enclosed internal volume of the ship.
➤ Includes all areas — bridge, machinery rooms, cabins.
➤ Used for regulations, port dues, safety rules.
💡 GT is a volume measure, not weight.

⚫ 2. Net Tonnage (NT)
➤ Portion of the ship available for cargo and passengers.
➤ Excludes non-revenue areas (engine room, crew spaces).
➤ Used to calculate canal/port fees.
💡 NT is always ≥ 30% of GT.

⚙️ 3. Deadweight Tonnage (DWT)
➤ The ship’s carrying capacity: cargo, fuel, water, crew, provisions.
➤ Helps shipowners & charterers assess payload limits.
➤ Measured in metric tonnes (1,000 kg).
💡 DWT = Loaded Displacement – Light Displacement

🌊 4. Displacement
➤ The total weight of the ship — hull + everything onboard.
➤ Determined by the volume of water displaced.
Types:
• Light Displacement: No cargo, no fuel
• Loaded Displacement: Fully loaded to Plimsoll line
💡 Used in naval architecture for stability & draft.

📊 Knowing these terms is essential for anyone in shipping, naval design, marine surveying, or chartering.

I am just back from a trip to Rotterdam, where I attended the Series 1-day conference. A huge thanks to the organizers, speakers and attendees for their insights, thought-provoking discussions, valuable knowledge sharing, collaborative spirit, and the opportunity to connect with new industry peers. The event truly showcased what a sustainable energy future could look like.

I had the opportunity to learned from and engage with experts from across the sector to discuss North Sea operations, cutting-edge innovations in the energy industry, future fuels, needs, workboats, and the critical role of training. Very topically then security, resilience and war gaming was also on the agenda.
