Creating a continuous flow between the hob and sink became one of the main challenges in this kitchen. An existing structural pillar marked the transition between the original house and the new extension, so the layout had to be carefully planned around it. By considering the working sequence, from washing and preparation to cooking, we were able to integrate the pillar into the design while maintaining a clear worktop and seamless circulation between both zones.

For this project, the starting point was the client’s preference for a more contemporary kitchen, but the idea went beyond its appearance. The layout was designed to create an intuitive sense of flow, allowing each zone to naturally lead into the next, so movement through the kitchen feels almost instinctive rather than something you have to think about.

Before we talk about materials, colours or finishes, good design starts with understanding how a space needs to work.

Layout planning is closely tied to anthropometry, the study of human body dimensions and movement. It helps us determine comfortable clearances, circulation paths, worktop heights and the relationship between different functions within a room. When those proportions are considered properly, every centimetre becomes more purposeful.
