It was with deep sadness that we learned of the passing of one of the STEPS Gardening Group members, Teresa. A stalwart of the group, Teresa will be sorely missed by everyone who used to meet at the polytunnel and we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Creating a bog garden is a great opportunity to introduce some new plants to your garden. Once it’s created and you’re ready to plant, there are plenty of plants to choose from that thrive in this environment.

Hedge your bets on a ‘super plant’ and help to combat air pollution 🌿

A new RHS science paper that looks at the effectiveness of hedges as air pollution barriers reveals that in traffic hotspots, the Cotoneaster franchetii is at least 20% more effective at soaking up pollution compared to other shrubs. The Cotoneaster franchetii has a special ability to trap harmful airborne particles and improve air quality.

Findings from a recent survey we commission has shown that 33% of people in the UK are affected by air pollution but only 6% take active steps in the garden to help alleviate it.

Planting ‘super plants’ like the Cotoneaster franchetii in gardens and green spaces where air quality issues are most prevalent means that we could all make a big difference in the fight against climate change in our own spaces.

Our RHS scientists are now moving into ‘RHS Hilltop – The Home of Gardening Science’, based at RHS Garden Wisley which contains new state-of-the-art lab facilities which will enable them to increase their research capabilities in these areas. RHS Hilltop opens on June 17.
